Was in 1998 when Takara in Japan decided to release his last 2-D fighting game for the black and white Game Boy by making a second installment of the Fatal Fury franchise -a first one titled as Fatal Fury 2 was made a few years earlier- this time using the engine of the past year version of KOF 96 concerning about characters size, sound effects, and fighting control and physics .

The game gives you a great cast of characters well known of the Fatal Fury and Real Bout series like Terry, Joe, Andy, Mai, Yamazaki, Billy Kane, Blue Mary, Duck King and Kim for a total of 18 (2 of them secret) all of them retaining their basic moves .

The gameplay, animations and control are good like the previous KOF games but adding the characteristic two plane system wich is made with a 3-D effect so you never have problems by identifying in wich plane are you or your enemy .

While the sound effects are fine the music tracks most of them don't sound quite good, they actually sound like a NES game like Double Dragon III -wich don't get me wrong that game was good but his music in here doesn't sound good at all-. While the music in KOF 96 sounded remarkable is inexplicable why the tracks in Fatal Fury Special are not nearly as good .

So considering the limits of the system this is a great game that succeeded in retain the important things of a fighting game where most of the others failed .
