Too tough to finish

User Rating: 6 | Real Bout Fatal Fury Special NGCD

The sixth installment of this brain-breakingly impossible to organize Fatal Fury series of fighting games is from 1997 and is a big improvement on the first game in regard to how the tournament plays out, but is hampered by a needless difficulty curve as there are some characters who are just far too overpowered. I usually play through these games as Terry Bogard, my favorite character, but I kept having to switch to new ones after hitting continue to find the right fighter to defeat different opponents, eventually giving up as I couldn't get a single punch in.

The gorgeous levels from all over the world make for lovely fighting arenas, the varied characters are full of personality and fun eccentricities, and it's especially satisfying when you pull off devastating special moves. Geese Howard appears as an unlockable hidden character, thus making my statement of him never being seen again after the first Real Bout in a previous review even more incorrect.

It's a shame that the sharp spike in difficulty stops it from being casual fun, but it's still a decent entry in the series and has recently enjoyed further success in the HD age by being ported to the PS4. I can only hope that a Steam release follows.

A soundtrack album was released at the time, as well as an arranged album and a more recent digital soundtrack.
