A blast from the past. A pretty looking game.

It isn't trying to copy Mario or Sonic or something, it isn't whipping out brilliant new ideas, it isn't fixing what wasn't broken. It's pulling out a once classic game for retro style goodness. Rayman has got to be one of the most... Um... Unique games that actually ended up being good. This dude has no arms or legs, shoots fireballs, flies with his hair, and runs around in some pretty screwed up environments that were well designed and are beautiful and fun at once. Read on!
A sidescroller among sidescrollers, this game was just trying to make a living. It was surprised when it was better than Sonic, and it got it's own dressing room right next to Mario. In it's future, it would submit to drugs like all the stars and start to die away and suck. That's analogy for, "Rayman WAS a classic, but later on started to get really bad.". Moving on, the enivronments are beautiful and easy on the eyes (albeit really messed up. In one level, you jump around on schools supplies way up in the clouds), a simple control system that doesn't get repetetive too fast, some creative challenges, and later on surprisingly diffucult levels. I don't remember anything about the music, but the graphics were top notch. No story whatsoever, but that it the last thing on your mind when you are running away from a caterpillar thing in a forest while collecting and dodging everything else and staring in awe at the visuals. I know I keep bringing it up, but the visuals are hands down the best part of this game. Colorful, beautiful, varied, and strange. The challenges can make you stop and think," Why did I die? When you retry, you might notice a rope in the background that makes the spiked floor fall when chopped by your helicopter hair. Just like any classic, you'll get a lot of hours into this game and you will die a lot, but this is expected considering what kind of game it is. It's hard to say more because the game is very simple, but very fun. I lost my copy of this game when I left my gameboy on the counter and the mice stole it( yup, that's what I'm going with) and I have been facepalming myself for years at the loss of my gameboy but more so this game. 8 out of 10.
