Ratchet & Clank is a defining game of the genre.

I like games where I get to run around blowing stuff up as much as anyone else. Throw in some platforming, exploration, engaging characters and clever dialogue, and now you've got a game I love. Somehow the people at Insomniac knew this, and decided to do something for me and my kind – they made Ratchet & Clank.

The plot of this game revolves around Ratchet, a mechanic on an isolated planet, and Clank, a tiny robot who was destined for the scrapheap. Clank must convince a reluctant Ratchet to help him save the galaxy. The cut scenes serve to both unfold the schemes of the antagonist, as well as develop the relationship between the two main characters, who grow increasingly closer through the course of the story. The voice work during these parts is fantastic. All the voices stand out without being over the top, and the dialogue is some of the best you'll come across in a game.

Everything about the controls, from swinging around with the Swingshot to manning an anti-aircraft turret, is simple to execute and never feels awkward. On top of that, since you're given control of the camera angle, there is rarely an occasion when you'll feel frustrated with the platforming. The same is true with the targeting mechanism of the weapons. There is never a moment when you'll blame the controls for missing a shot.

Ratchet sports an amazing arsenal. During the course of the game, you'll acquire a flamethrower, guided missiles, decoys, and mines. The game also boasts an impressive array of non-lethal gadgetry. Accessories such as the oxygen helmet and the grind boots, as well as mechanical upgrades to Clank, are essential to reaching certain parts of the map. When Clank has to go adventuring on his own he will find, scattered throughout the level, other robots. He can issue them commands such as 'attack' and 'follow', and will need a certain number of them to open locked doors.

As if the gameplay wasn't enough, the developers decided to throw in some slick graphics and audio. The game has a wonderful cartoon feel to it but avoids being childish. The music contrasts the cartoon feel of the visuals, as it seems fit for an epic adventure. To round the presentation out, every sound effect, from the readying of a weapon to the destruction of a tank, is just right, helping to make this fantastic world of weapons and gadgets more believable.

Ratchet & Clank is a defining game of its genre. It's rare to find such a great mix of platforming, action, and storytelling, but this game manages to combine the three flawlessly. Thank you Insomniac – you guys read my mind.
