User Rating: 8.9 | Ratchet & Clank (Platinum) PS2
If you're looking for a platformer that succeeds in every aspect of a game, Ratcher & Clank has it all. Let me tell you this is definetely one of the best platformers to ever be released on the PS1/PS2, and that it is the best platformer I've played since Mario 64. The game is also much better than Jak and Daxter: The Precursors Legacy, if you have been tossing up which one to buy out of the two. Ratchet & Clank also has an edge in every way over Jak and Daxter:: The Precursors Legacy. There are so many things you can do in this game and it doesn't feel like your restricted in any way and you have the freedom of what you want to do, and don't worry you won't be trapped in the same area with the same sorroundings throughout the game. The gameplay doesn't feel like it's dragging on or getting stale. Why? Because you can travel to all kinds of different planets throughout the game by getting an Info Bot (robots) that are on each planet. They are required so that you are given the location, bearings and events that are happening on a specific planet. There are also a whole lot of different weapons and gadgets you'll get throughout the game. This gives the gameplay in Ratchet & Clank a lot of flexibility over a lot of other platformers. You new weapons/items in the game by exploring the different planets, where you can find stores, that are inside these blue boxes scattered throughout the galaxy. This is where you can buy ammo, new weapons, and items. You buys these different products by collecting bolts ( the games currency!) ,which you get by defeating enemies, breaking boxes and by finding them scattered throughout the planets. Ratchet and Clank has a lot of re-playability, so you won't get bored in a hurry and it's the type of game you would have to play complete five times before you start to get sick of it. You can also play the game online. I personally haven't tried, but it sounds like a lot of fun. The game has very good looking graphics which seem to amaze you, since the PS2's Graphics don't have much depth and options as the Gamecube and X Box. The game looks very smooth and you can tell that most of the effort went into making the graphics look very flash. You have to say that the different environments and worlds you encounter look very polished. This gives Ratchet & Clank's gameplay an extra edge over games like Jak and Daxter: The Precursors Legacy and Sly. I thought the sound and the characters voice overs have a lot of depth, and that they are done at the highest standard you'd come to expect. But in the opening two cutscenes in the game (dialogue) the game just completely wen't choppy and lagged out big time on me, and I couldn't understand anything coming out of the game at all. I'm not sure If it's a minor bug in just the version I bought? But I never experienced anything like that in the rest of the game. So let me know if you have those kinds of problems when you play the game. :) The final result is an extriemely solid game that has accomplished everything the game was sent out to do. If your still thinking or wondering if the game is worth getting. Take my advice. The next time you have spare money floating around. Don't hesitate and just go out there and by it asap, because it is the best platformer I've played to date on the PS2 and for very long time.
