User Rating: 5 | Rampart SMS
Aside from Populous and Rampart there aren't any strategy games on the Sega Master System. Rampart is better described as an intelligent actioner than a pure strategy game.

Graphics:
The game takes place in medieval times and plays from a top-down view of various maps. The graphics look very old and helpless. It feels like Tengen just ported the NES version without taking advantage of the Master system's hardware. The opening screen is cool though, but in-game graphics are functional at best. The very few different kinds of enemy units look hastily made and the map upon which the game takes place looks very uninspiring. The layout and menu system feel a bit broken. The explosions and burning ships look ok though!

Sound:
Well… There is no excuse really. The sound effects in this game sound like they come from an Intellivision game (definitely no pun intended). I don't get it. Just because it's a strategy game doesn't mean that it doesn't need any music or good sound effects. And the little happy tune you get at the beginning of your turn is just embarrassing. The Master system has many games with excellent tunes. Listen to the audio of Shadow of the beast, it was released the same year as this. I mean, it's not like the graphics are taking up all cartridge space… There is no excuse for this, but there is a reason; laziness. Shame on you Tengen!

Gameplay:
The first thing you do as you start a new map is to choose your home castle and place your cannons within its walls. Then you get to control a crosshair/pointer and fire away at the enemy ships as they draw near and fire at your castle walls. After the action sequence it's time for the repair and build phase where you get randomly generated wall-pieces to repair your walls. Once that is done, you'll have the chance to expand your walled area and make room for more cannons and to get more points. This is all timed so you'll have to be quick. If the enemy ships still are in good condition as they dock at land they'll land ground troops that can conquer you unless you blow them away or build walls to hinder their advance. You'll have to think quickly and make swift decisions. This game is very appealing as it has a very easy, addictive and unique gameplay.

Lastability:
Once you get into it, you're hooked! There are two "campaigns" to choose from. In the beginner's campaign you'll get more time and you get to start out with more cannons. Also the game is more forgiving if you missed a small spot in your wall while building/repairing. The game isn't very deep though, which makes you lose interest after a few hours of play. However, the lack of strategy games on the Master System makes you come back for a quick run sometimes.
