Under-rated, particularly with all the required fixes in place.

User Rating: 7.5 | RAGE PC
RAGE was a long time in development and full of bugs when it was finally released. I think that caused a lot of animosity when it finally launched. But a couple of years after it's release I purchased a digital download from STEAM for $5, and it came with all the fixes, so I got no gripes. It ran smoothly on my mediocre machine (which was my most major concern), and playing it was a delightful surprise.

I've seen comparisons to Fallout 3, and let me assure you, it's not FO3. I mean, I think FO3 was awesome, and RAGE is NOT "awesome". It has none of the depth and complexity, and the story is...weak...by comparison...even though it's basically the same. Post-apocalyptic world where Vault...er...I mean Ark survivors are unique, and are targeted both as potential saviours of the denizens of the Wasteland, and threats to the current ruling regime.

The game progresses in a much more linear fashion, but that's OK. As your basic shooter, it's a gas to play. And one big advantage (maybe the only one) that it has on FO3 is the transportation. Vehicular combat is an important focus in this game, and it proves to be an enjoyable diversion from any end-of-the-world scenario I've experienced.

You meet a lot of interesting characters on your journey, all of whom are well voiced-acted (a plus, imho), and even though there's never any real sense of compulsion to do right by any of them, it still makes the trip enjoyable.

But let's cut to the chase. What makes any shooter a "good" shooter is the combat, and I found the battle for Wasteland survival to be as good as I could want. The diversity in weapons, coupled with the ability to purchase or manufacture different types of ammo, provided me with all the options I could ask for when it came to dispatching my adversaries, of which there is an admirable variety.

The bottom line is that there's really nothing unique or remarkably different about this game to set it apart from a lot of other shooters on the market. Still, I found it to be a thoroughly entertaining ride, well worth the price of admission. It may not live up to it's pre-release hype, given it's long development process, but then, how many games do?

It's cheap, and it provides at least 40 hours of fun gaming mayhem. And that's hella better than a lot of the newer releases out today.
