For a game for PSX, it has a very nice selection of cars to choose from...

When the Ridge Racer series first came out, I was not totally comfortable with the idea of only racing in 2-3 cars. I was really hoping that the PSX was capable of more than just 2-3 cars as a selection. But, once Ridge Racer 4 came out, I finally changed my opinion about this game. At first glance you think that maybe it's just the same style of cars and just more tracks, but that is totally not the case here. The game offers over 40+ cars with 2-3 possible modifications to be made with each car. If you want a racing game with a good variety of cars, just check out what this game has to offer.

GRAPHICS
=========
I will say that the graphics are okay, but please keep in mind that this game was for PSX, not PS2. So the graphics are not the best, but I have seen a lot worse. Overall, the detail work and track views are pretty nice and are descent eye-candy. Overall though, you will be more amazed by the details in the games and vehicles than the tracks and courses you drive on. Although a lot of the tracks are very nicely detailed as well. Not at all what you might expect from a PSX.

CONTROL
=========
The controls are pretty basic and you don't need to learn much if you are already a racer fan. The only learning curve here is that you will have to know the different handling styles of a DRIFT and GRIP type cars. For me, the GRIP offers more control versus DRIFT which requires some skill to understand and learn. A DRIFT car requires pumping the gas to do cornering properly. GRIP just requires the right amount of brake and then back to gas in order to do proper corning around the turns. Personally for me, I prefer DRIFT because you don't have to take your fingers off the gas much, which means little slowing down. Just time your pumping and steer yourself into control again and you are back in the race. DRIFT is the more difficult style to learn, but once you do learn it, you will understand why DRIFT is so cool to learn and know.

OVERALL
========
Some other things to know is that in order to get extra cars, you do need to perform really good in the races. The more 1st places you get, the better the car you get to race in the finals. The other cars are gained based on either the difficulty or placing in the race. But, overall, this is a very enjoyable racer that you will have fun with. The only thing that bugs me is that the game claims it has over 300+ cars, when in reality, it's just 90% of the cars have a different tuning and add ons, and only a rare few cars are unique to the game. You are also limited to only 8 tracks to race on, but all offer a good challenge to practice and gain experience on either as a DRIFT or GRIP car. My personal favorite car is VOLCANO, fast moving, fantastic pickup, and if you understand DRIFT style cars, awesome around the corners. But, for you, if you only have a PSX and you want a good racer, check out Ridge Racer 4, you can't go wrong if you are a racing fan.
