User Rating: 8.7 | R-Type Final PS2
I've always been a big fan of R-Type, and when R-Type: Final would have to be the best of the series to date. The game is, of course, very short, as these side scrollers always are. However, it has quite a bit of replay value. The 7 levels go by quickly, but each time through you can make choices which effect which variants of the level you will see. Some levels have multiple variants (up to 4 in one case),a secret level unlocked when using a certain ship *cough* Crossing The Rubicon *cough* as well as 3 seperate endings each with its own distinctly different boss fight and level. There are also 101 ships to unlock, I assumed most of which would be filler ships to up the number to the impressive 101, and I was grateful that I was mistaken. Although there are a few ships that are simply more powerful versions of another, there are many with wildly different weapons and play styles, as well as the final 3 being fully customizable. this is the epitome of side scrolling shooters, a throw back to a simpler day of gaming. A lot of you new school gamers will nay say its simplistic gameplay and 2D movement, but you are the same mouth breathers who think Blues Brothers 2000 is the greatest movie ever made without ever seeing the original, and you all can go to hell. Oh, or try the game.
