Hard to find a fault in the retro goodness!

I always loved the R-Type games, but never had the skills to get past the second level with the brutal Revival (Classic) respawn system. This package finally lets me see the later levels in both their original pixelly glory, and in their flashy modern reworking.

There are so many things this game does perfectly, it's easy to actually overlook them. Both R-Type and R-Type 2 are ported very smoothly, control well, and sound great. Menus and intro screens are very pretty, especially the full arcade cabinets!

The difficulty of Classic mode is what you should expect from this hard 80's series, but that difficulty is perfectly tempered by Infinite mode. Instead of simply taking out all the challenge for lazy players, Infinite mode lets players like myself see the beautiful and classic games while slowly honing our skills to take on the various Achievement and leaderboard challenges. Yes, you can die repeatedly and still see the end of either game, but you won't keep a spot on the leaderboard unless you actually develop some skill.

The transition from 2D original graphics to full 3D graphics is fantastic, and the fact that you can switch on the fly is actually really fun. I play most often in the 2D style, but find myself switching often just to see the differences. This is what R-Type would have looked like in 1986 if the technology had existed... There's even a "crazy" camera angle to accentuate the 3D graphics, and it's a nice touch.

With the level select feature, multiplayer, multiple graphic options, and statistic tracking and achievements, these classic games are more accessible than ever before, and fans of the genre should have no trouble getting their money's worth. I'm hoping for a similar treatment of R-Type 3...
