Balancing in-depth text management simulation with easy to pick up baseball makes PureSim a must have in the genre.

With a number of text-based baseball management simulations on the market, it would seem at first glance that there would be little room for a lone developer, who main job isn't the creation of the game, to put out a wonderfully built and yet complex game. Yet, this is precisely what Sullivan has done with PureSim Baseball, now in it's 2007 iteration.

The game, which is now packaged with the Lahman Database and available from MatrixGames, comes with a variety of options for almost any fan of baseball. For the more quick simulation-inclined, there is the option to build either a historical MLB association or a completely fictional one and simulate hundreds of seasons of history (although that would take up a nice piece of hard drive space!). A season can be quickly simulated in a matter of just minutes, even for a large association. On the other side, there is the PSPNcast, which allows for in-game management from at-bat to at-bat. With a decent and growing variety of options such as sacrifice bunt, steal, and intentional walk, as well as a new ball flight animation, the game comes alive while retaining the feel of a text simulation.

There are plenty of statistics tracked, from the main ones like RBI, HR's, and ERA to splits and detailed team information. New this year is a deep html almanac where managers can go to see their league come alive statistically. Expansion was brought back in the first patch of the game, now available, as well.

I would go into much more detail, but you should just try out the demo yourself. I've owned the past two versions of PureSim myself and find the game extremely easy to pick up and play, even after a long hiatus, but it has the depth that baseball and stat geeks need.

Finally, Sullivan has been great at communicating with the community that plays his game and is constantly interacting positively with those who have purchased the game.
