EndWar to rage again

Creative director Michael De Plater confirms "smaller team" at Ubisoft Shanghai focusing on single-player story, gameplay depth for RTS sequel.

One would think that a game with the name "EndWar" wouldn't leave much room for a sequel. However, when the game in question involves one of the biggest brands from one of the largest publishers, that line of thinking would clearly be wrong.

Speaking with UK gaming site VideoGamer.com as part of the Develop conference in Brighton, England, last week, Ubisoft creative director Michael De Plater confirmed that the company is at work on a follow-up to last year's voice-controlled real-time strategy game. Ubisoft's Shanghai studio is once again handling development, with De Plater confirming that a "smaller team" there is currently at work on the title.

According to De Plater, the Shanghai team is primarily focusing its efforts on improving the game's single-player storyline, as well as the original's depth of gameplay. Notably, both areas mentioned by De Plater drew fire from GameSpot's generally positive review of the game last year.

Of the story, De Plater stated, "You compare [EndWar] to World in Conflict, or Company of Heroes, where they invest a lot in the storytelling. There's no mysteries about how we could do that and apply it in the game. It's just something we didn't give attention to. Giving more attention to the single-player is straightforward to address and will make the game a lot of fun."

De Plater went on to state that improving gameplay should also be a relatively painless endeavor. "Changing the way the combat chain works, the paper, scissors, rock, and adding the differentiation between the three factions, again, it's not something that's even necessarily hard to do; it's something that we chose not to do with the accessibility," he said. "So, yeah I think it's really easy and fun to address."

De Plater offered no expected release date or platform information on the sequel to EndWar, which was released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, DS, and PC.

Not all gaming companies can make a game like that. But that would be cool. But taking orders from the Commander.

The original EndWar isn't multi-player only.

what they need to do is. make a open world game not to open. shooting explosives every where people getting killed left and right. building geoing down to the groud and. you are eatehr put as a squad leader or a member of a squad. and do the same objectives you do in endwar. it will be like battle field but playing in a single player mode and having AI just killing each other from left and right. and put in things like taking cover. healing team mates or team mate healing you. grabing your buddy that is wounded and move him to a safer place( like in arma 2).

game companys never really made a game that is sooo crazy in the battle field. they should watch a lot of war moives like black hawk down or saving private ryan and see how a battle field is. a battle field is not when your one guy and then u go with a squad and all ur friends gets killed and ur the only one put up againts 100 enemy troop and a few tanks. i mean medal or horner always makes the 1st level like a crazy battle field then it puts u one a single quest to pass the game. a real war game should be put as 2 armys in a open world map going up againts each other and the player right in the middle fighting to get to its objective but always have a squad to back him up.

also what a good(shooter) war game will let almost every building accesable to you and the AI for each side to use the building for ocver to set a MG nest etc..

Finally a game company is sing their brains! I really want to play the first one but when I heard it was an online multiplayer only game, I didnt want to buy it. Now they are making single player campaigns, now people who care more about the story line can play Endwar! I am defintely getting this!

Sounds like they actually half-assed the first one to me. Even so...

Good to see they wish to improve it in the sequel thanks to feedbacks and reviews, though.

My only mark against the first was that it was too shallow. The voice control was nothing short of amazing. If they just give the game a little more depth with unit types and upgrades the second one should be really good.

The first 1 was ok for a while but it all got a bit repetitive. I'd like a FPS set in this universe where you play as a single soldier in a squad. Actually thats a dumb thing to say i just remembered MAG was coming out.

Well thats definitely good they have already sorted out the camera and controls so now they just need to build on that and they will easily have the best RTS on 360

This fills me so much joy, I loved EndWar even though I could see its down falls. The fact that ubisoft wish to improve the game is very nice.
