Scarface tops October

Combined, Vivendi's Xbox, PS2, and PSP adaptation of the classic crime movie sell over a half-million units; PC version bombs.

After months of anticipation by its film inspiration's myriad fans, the game adaptation of Scarface hit stores on October 8. Developed by Radical Entertainment (Simpson: Hit & Run) and published by its owner, Vivendi Games, the title came in four flavors--Scarface: The World Is Yours for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC, and Scarface: Power. Money. Respect. for the PlayStation Portable.

Though the games weren't exactly a hit with critics, they did do well with gamers. According to sales figures from the NPD Group, the combined regular and collector's editions of the PS2 Scarface made it the best-selling game in the US in October, selling more than 366,000 units and earning over $18.7 million. The Xbox version also did reasonably well, moving more than 110,000 copies and ringing up $5.4 million-plus at the cash register.

Though its strategy-based gameplay differed from its action-oriented siblings, Scarface: Power. Money. Respect. also did well enough to be the top-selling PSP title of the month, besting even Madden NFL 07. The game sold over 37,000 units, racking up just less than $1.5 million. Combined, all four Scarface games sold more than 520,000 copies.

While the above three Scarfaces sold briskly, sales of the PC version were less than impressive. It cleared just more than 9,000 units, earning just less than $450,000.

Originally, Scarface: The World Is Yours was also set to come to the Xbox 360. That version, though, was canceled in late July when the PSP game was announced.

"The majority of reviews for this game have been very hard on Tony. If you don't believe it, go to gamerankings.com, and look at ALL of the reviews. PSM gave it a 50, as mentioned in one of my previous posts. And they weren't alone..."

You are either mathematically inept, an utter lunatic or a bare-faced liar. I mean, Gamerankings even provides nice pie charts for you to see the proportions for yourself! Two thirds of the PS2 reviews score the game at 80% or above! Is that your definition of being "very hard on Tony"? The Xbox scores are even better.

And contrary to Gamespot's self-aggrandizing spiel at the top of this article, the game was CLEARLY a hit with the majority of critics, unless 80% is considered a poor showing these days.

hype and in-yer-face advertising are far more important to sales than gameplay could hope to be.

it the fact that you CAN kill cops and old ladies that makes the brand so good, with addition of countless other stuff."

    Huh?

    Countless other stuff?

Like what, car physics that makes PS1 driving games like Driver and Destruction Derby feel fast, fluid, and responsive?

Driving in the GTA games is akin to driving through a pool of tar. And isn't that the biggest part of the game?

The only draw I have for those games, is that they are free roaming. Unfortunately, that's not enough for me. And I like my hot coffee black, with a dollop of sugar.

Lastly, Brittany Spears is a top selling recording artist. Say no more.

I gotta say I agree with the Gamespot scoring on the game all the way. I played it myself and thought it was good but not great.

Well, that's sad but it makes sence. I recently quit my job at Gamestop so I can say this from first hand experience: the majoriy of people who purchase video games are morons. My store had it's fair share of actual gamers who understand the difference between a great title and something that was spewed from a round table meeting of developers looking to make a quick buck. Video games are no longer a safe haven for nerds who just want to have fun, it has become mainstream and has become bigger than what it really should be. This is just testament to the very sad truth, the video game industry has lost it's soul.

GameSpot, for the record, is in the MINORITY in the review scoring. Take a look at some the other reviewers:

    IGN - 8.7
    Game Informer - 8.5
    CCC - 9.2

More than 80% of reviews are in the 70s or above, with the vast majority of those hitting in the 80s. It wasn't a hit with GAMESPOT critics, but was a hit with "most" other critics. Don't swallow the slant blindly...

I totally understand the appeal of watching an anti-hero on screen, or reading about one in one of them "books". What does creep me out is that some people actually think that he's a good example of how "anybody can make it to the top"...

By killing, and selling poison to the people in your community.

Again, as a story, it's one thing. But some people really think that he's a hero, and damn, I can't think of anything more stupid.

As for my GTA comment, it's just a gentle ribbing. I don't like playing the games, because I don't find it amusing to glorify mass slaughter of innocents, for fun. But that's just me. Now killing aliens, or Nazis...sure. But I don't find it "cool" to kill little old ladies, or even cops, much as I don't really like'm.

But I fear the people who do nothing but play and worship GTA. Fearing them in the way that I wouldn't want to be around them if there is a mass social breakdown, and chaos erupts. 'Cause you know at least some of those guys are going to be the first ones to go on rampages...

"Last time I checked he's a psychotic murdering drug dealer. He's hardly a hero or a positive example for anyone. Plus, anyone that uses a fictional character as some kind of role model has some series loose marbles rolling around in their skull."

Its called an Anti-Hero. He does terrible things, but you root for him anyway. You cant deny the fact that Tony Montana is a fantastic character to watch on screen, and thats why you love him no matter what he does. I agree with what you said about reviews tho. A review is nothing more than an opinion.

    >>>Sadly, it looks like a strong brand name is more important than reviews.

Or, maybe consumers can think for themselves and not be swayed by a stranger's opinion.

    >>>So what do you consider a hero then? Tony Montana is the OG and everyone wants to be like him or be him. He's the ultimate example that you can come from nowhere and make it to the very top but be careful because you can lose everything in the blink of an eye, or the shot of a bullet.

You can shoot anyone if you use Tony's agents. Tony himself is the only one with the moral rule not to shoot non-drug dealers and other bad guys.

"Maybe it's just that the GTA audience have very low expectations, slap some cursing on, let you shoot anybody, and blam, instant gratification"

This is utter BS. GTA fans tend to have high expectations, and we enjoy the GTA style free-roaming experiance.

FYI you cant just shoot anybody in this game either.

So what do you consider a hero then? Tony Montana is the OG and everyone wants to be like him or be him. He's the ultimate example that you can come from nowhere and make it to the very top but be careful because you can lose everything in the blink of an eye, or the shot of a bullet.
