Disgaea 3 to blight US PS3s

Nippon Ichi's Netherworld-set strategy-RPG series descends on Sony's latest console in August.

NIS America is preparing a Prinny Barrage for the PlayStation 3. The domestic branch of Japanese publisher Nippon Ichi Software today announced that it will be bringing the latest installment of the Disgaea strategy-role-playing game series to North America later this year.

Originally released last month in Japan, Disgaea 3 introduces a new main character and supporting cast, much like the series' first sequel. However, staples like the Netherworld setting and the abundance of knife-wielding penguin helpers known as Prinnies will return, ensuring that the game retains some aspects that are distinctly Disgaea in nature. As in previous games, Disgaea 3 will feature 2D characters and 3D backgrounds.

Gameplay mechanics from previous Disgaea games will also be returning, as the third installment in the franchise will once again see players level up their equipment as well as their characters in Item Worlds. The Geo Panel system, by which certain colored squares in each level confer bonuses or penalties for the characters who occupy them, will also return. However, Nippon Ichi is throwing in some new wrinkles to the gameplay, including a Geo Block system that allows players to change a level's landscape and access hard-to-reach areas.

Disgaea 3 has been rated T for Teen and is scheduled for an August release.

Wow nothing new in this news. The same stuff we've known forever. Thank you for the lack of information Gamespot. By the way if you haven't played the first 2 yet GET ON TOP OF THAT NOW. Number 2 makes number 1 feel broken and it's likely that number 3 will be so amazing that number 2 will be left broken. So play them in order before it's too late

Zidaneski: "It's the games that take 6-10$ that's not worth it." Well a lot of people like short games.

I would like to wait to buy a PS3, but I doubt my mom will wanna wait until August for me to buy it. Still I'll hold off until then so that I can buy Disgaea 3 when it comes out.

I'm sorry to say I just lost respect for Nippon Ichi after viewing the screenshots. I love Disgaea but why bother making a 3rd gen game with 2nd gen graphics. This game looks hastily thrown together on a ramen noodle budget. For shame...

I love Disgaea and want 2D to continue forever, but these sprites need to be much higher resolution. This looks like it could have been on the original Xbox.

I find it odd this is just now being written when this was made public quite some time ago. Sadly Atlus and NIS are almost always overlooked...

ShadoweaverCode 360player_eq12 - Yea, good point, at least the sprites were HD. I still think Culdcept Saga could have made one heck of an arcarde release, but with MS's (50?) MB limit, they might have been forced to release it as an official title at a discounted price. Sony doesn't have a size cap on their PSN releases.

That size limit's been increased to 250MB (or 150MB, I can't remember) a long time ago already.

I hope they really up the graphics. I like Nippon Ichi's style, but if this game is appearing on the PS3, and retailing for $59.99, but still looks like its PS2 predecessors, then I'm going to be disappointed. Why not make it for last gen then?

i know it sucks that it might cost $65 but i am pretty sure we wont give it much thought after where playing the game because it just that nice.

Now maybe Atlus will look to this and make a next gen Shin Megami
