US console charts: July 23-29

Mario, Brain Age are back on top again with NCAA Football 07 in hot pursuit; PSP Tekken punches into top 10 in debut week.

Summer is typically noted in the gaming industry to be the slow season, with few new high-profile releases hitting the market, save for a few sports games. It's no surprise, then, that a couple of springtime juggernauts have retaken the top slots in Best Buy's console sales charts with little competition from new releases.

The dynamic Nintendo DS duo of New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day are numbers one and two, respectively, once again. The two games were released several months ago and have hung around the top five since May. They were temporarily knocked out of the top spots last week when Electronic Arts' NCAA Football 07 was released.

NCAA Football's stay at the top was short lived, but it is still making its presence felt in the top 10. The game is on the charts four times, representing the PlayStation 2 (third), the Xbox 360 (fourth), Xbox (seventh), and PlayStation Portable (eighth).

The PSP had another entrant in the fifth spot, courtesy of newly released Tekken: Dark Resurrection. Another handheld title, Big Brain Academy for the DS, graduated its way into sixth. Rounding out the top 10 was Naruto: Ultimate Ninja for the PS2 in ninth and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the Xbox 360 in 10th.

PSP = DS and if anyone doesn't agree with me, then they either don't have a PSP or DS.

oh yea, its that good squeak, i sat there for hours playing it. Its got so much content, so many secrets and different things to explore. If you have ever played ANY mario games, or for that matter if you havn't, you will enjoy it.

Tekken is pretty fun and I got my copy a couple of days ago. I'd thought it will be higher but eh, its just one store. I hope more PSP games will be up there soon with the line up because after Tekken, there really isn't anything to play, or at least new to play.

Why do people have to bash other systems? It doesn't make any sense since competition means cheaper prices and if one had the money, they'll buy all the freaking systems anyway so those who bash systems should be bashed, eh, don't really care, just ranting and bored at work.

Fear the bunny, eat the bunny.

"Also, it's the same old thing - long loading screens on a small screen. Think about it!"

in Tekken, there's no load that takes longer than 8 seconds :/

Glad to see a couple of PSP titles on there, I'm not a Tekken fan, but I might pick it up when the price drops. I wonder if any brain training titles are coming to the psp??? haven't played one yet and I don't know anyone whith a DS "doesn't sell as much here in Italy".

Frankly, if I had the extra money I'd buy a DS, but I don't, and I got the gigapack + 1 game for 249 euros. just more bang for the buck IMO, I travel a lot so having movies in the memory stick is a big plus, a 2 hour movie is about 300 megs "small screen small resolution" , that usually means 3 movies, or a bunch of anime episodes, I'm extremely happy with it.

oops I'm ranting again, sorry, anyway, if I get a raise, and the price drops I might get a DS, just out of curiousity, but I love my PSP so everybody stop the system bashing, because truth is, if we all had the money, we'd all have every system, because we all love games. oh and Luminees KICKS ASS.

    peace

It's not that easy to get sales for all stores, especially on a week to week basis. Best Buy actually chooses to release this data to GameSpot. Most companies would not release this type of information on a weekly basis, and to get a national sales total it would take too long and the week's data would be pointless.
If you want more accurate numbers, you'll have to wait for monthly or annual charts. Take this sales chart for what it is, an interesting and fun sample of recent trends in video game sales. They might not be completely accurate, but they still have some validity.

it's becuase nintendo makes good handhelds...it's not like microsoft should even be allowed in the games market.

They have yet to make money. They just buy thier way into first place and hope the investment pays off later by making you all pay for extra maps and online service which pc gamers get for free.

It's a give and take model.

Wow so much fanboyism I wish people would think about game-play. I own a DS not an PSP but Tekken does sound fun. Before you go on a fanboyish rant ask yourself if you would ever play another systems games and most of these third party games are on all the systems (if not Nintendo just Sony and Moneysoft). Most of the time fanboyism is just what you have grown up on. I am a die hard Nintendo fanboy and if Sony was still around (God rest its soul) I would probably love that more then Nintendo because my dad used to play SH2 all the time for me. I was 2 but I still remember it vividly. Well I guess what I am saying is please don't hate on other fanboys and systems it really annoys me.

I just cannot believe the staying power of nintendo in the handheld business (sigh!). The very reason Xboy will never come around.
