MLB: The Show gets extra innings on PS3

Next edition of Sony's baseball game announced for the PS3, PS2, PSP; online league play among the key new features.

Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings have just wrapped up, with several baseball players signing deals for outrageous amounts of money to play with new teams or stay with their previous squads.

Sony made its own baseball deal recently, announcing that it was bringing the MLB: The Show series back for extra innings. MLB 07: The Show was announced today for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable.

MLB 07: The Show adds online league play, lets gamers compete in online leagues of up to 30 teams (Sony did not specify which platforms this feature would be available for). Baseball fans can also tinker with the game's sliders and upload them to servers for others to try out.

The series' pitching has been given the most changes in the upcoming edition of the franchise. Catchers will recommend pitches based on hitters' tendencies, or players can shake off the backstop and simply throw what they want. Like the sport it emulates, MLB 07 will also feature finicky umpires, with their own strike zones and tendencies.

The atmosphere of baseball is being focused on in the PS3 version, with the addition of crowd animations, including tussles for foul balls, the seventh inning stretch, and the wave. Sony is also adding correct grips and arm angles for different pitch types for true students of the game.

MLB 07: The Show has not yet been rated or priced and will be available in spring 2007.

    @melo

    "In 2005, in response to EA Sports' exclusive license with the National Football League and ESPN prohibiting any NFL 2K games for the foreseeable future, Take-Two Interactive signed an exclusive third-party licensing contract with Major League Baseball (MLB), MLBPA and MLBAM to produce MLB games. The agreement, which runs from Spring 2006 to 2012, allows for the console manufacturers Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo to produce MLB titles for their respective platforms, but bars third party developers such as EA Sports from continuing or developing their own MLB games."

    Basically 2k bought the cross platform liscense, which is why this game is only coming out on sony consoles. Sony can only develop a baseball game for sony platforms. Microsoft can develop a baseball game for their platforms and so on. It was basically done to C*ck block EA Games after they nabbed the NFL license.

    I started playing baseball games again with EA's MVP 2003 (rest in peace, that was a good series), but I dug 'The Show' 06 a lot. Online league play is something I've looked for in ALL SPORTS GAMES for years, and when Sega's NFL 2k5 had it, I thought a new day was dawning, but EA did it's thing with the NFL and the exclusivity garbage. Anyway, I'm all over this game and I suspect that it will make me very happy. For the guy that said that this might be his first baseball game ever...Well, it baseball sim. Kinda like the baseball madden in that you don't just pick it up and win 40-0. So if you are like, one of those guys that doesn't play Madden because it left the casual player behind years ago, you might wanna rent it first.

    I would love to get this game..but I just sold my ps2 a few months ago to get money towards the 360. Now I have the 360. It sucks that our baseball game sucks..atleast we have that guy from MVP coming over..hopefully he'll make things better..but whoever has a ps2 or ps3 DEF. get this game..I loved 06: The Show when I had my ps2..and the career in this sounds 10x better

    Yeah... it is kinda sad EA Sports ended its contract with the MLB to make baseball games. I loved MVP Baseball 2005, best baseball game i have ever played. The news about MLB 07 The Show sounds great with all the new features. I hope this series turns out to be good just like MVP. Anyways I'll probably get it over MLB 2K7...

    Being able to have leagues of mixed platforms (i.e. PS3 + PS2 + PSP all in the same online league) would be tight.

    As an Aussie, I find baseball really boring (Cricket is the greatest sport of all, you won't like it immediately but give it a go, you'll thank me) but I"ve always thought it could make a good computer game. Hopefully the controls will be good and the game will have a nice TV like presentation.
