US console sales charts: July 2-8

Soccer games run all over Mario, Brain Age; price drops on BestBuy.com propel older handheld titles into the top 10.

What happens when gaming's summer release schedule slows down? Cash-conscious gamers seek shelter in the shade of sales, picking up older games for discounted prices. This past week, BestBuy.com cleared out some inventory on some handheld games.

Jumping from out of nowhere and into the number-two slot of the week's best sellers was Drill Dozer for the Game Boy Advance. The highly rated game, which was released on February 6, benefited from a price slashed all the way down to $10 and has since sold out. Death Jr. for the PlayStation Portable also received a budget-priced boost, up to number six, as did number 13, Battles of Prince of Persia for the DS.

The excitement of the World Cup convinced gamers to play some virtual footie, as the PlayStation 2 version of 2006 FIFA World Cup made like Italy and landed in the number-one spot. Not far behind it at number three was the Xbox version, and the seven, eight, and nine spots went to the Xbox 360, GameCube, and PSP editions of the game, respectively. The beautiful game wasn't done there, however, as the 10th slot went to FIFA Soccer 2006 for the PlayStation 2.

DS-mania may be slowing down a bit, as Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day and New Super Mario Bros., two games that have been in the top three for months, slipped to numbers four and five, respectively.

The new release for the Xbox 360, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II, failed to battle its way into the top 10 by one. However, older 360 titles made the top 20, including Major League Baseball 2K6 (13th), Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (15th), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (17th), and Over G Fighters (19th).

My thoughts. It took too long for this game to reach on the charts. If anyone had played the already excellent FIFA 06, then they would have known that FIFA World Cup 2006 would have been a killer game. Next, for all the haters out there. Please stop with the comparison of Winning Eleven and FIFA Soccer. I own both games, and although I have to admit that I play both recently released FIFA's more than Winning Eleven 8 and 9 I would find it hard to compare both games because I love them both. So please stop the hating and just show some love to what is known all around the world as the "beautiful sport."

er I think you mean "beautiful game"

ok people. please stop discreditng the BestBuy sales charts. it is a proven fact that small sample sales reflect the tendancies of the overall population.

I would have to agree. Surveys and polls are the same. Even though it may seem like a small sample, it is most often large enough to tell us what the general trend is. Is it perfect? Of course not it gives us an idea of what is happening.

ok people. please stop discreditng the BestBuy sales charts. it is a proven fact that small sample sales reflect the tendancies of the overall population. that is how they see who is ahead in political office races. take a survey of 1000 people in your area before the next election, and i guarantee that the person who gets the majority of that vote will win the election.

these charts may not be 100% accurate, but the really are a strong indicator of the overall sales.

on RevolutionFreaks comment...nice.. but anyways, soccer (football) is a popular game worldwide, sure its not as big in america (maybe its because we'll probably never win the world cup) but we got alot of fans here as well.

My prediction for next week is that at least 6 of the eight newbies will be gone from the list.

Gamespot wouldn't have to use weekly sales from Best Buyy if actually NDP stepped up its game. If they want to charge for their stats then they need to do a proficient job by:
    1. Getting data from WALMART, the biggest retailer in North America.
    2. Adding results from US based online retailers?
    3. Releasing weekly sales data.

PSP games in the Top 10 list?? That's a BIG first!!

And it's good that Drill Dozer is 10 bucks, it's a fun game.
It's just kinda not worth the hard mode it has....

So does this mean people who shop at Best Buy love soccer? Just don't play real life soccer in the stores then, you break it you buy it.
