Oblivion confirmed for PS3, PSP

[UPDATE] Bethesda says Oblivion will be ready for the PlayStation 3 launch; PSP edition to follow in the spring.

Sometimes a new game is a well-kept secret, as was the case with Doom for the Xbox 360, which was made available almost as soon as it was announced this morning. Other times the secret is not so well kept, as was the case with the Xbox 360 versions of Assassin's Creed and Guitar Hero II, or the latest games to officially join that club, the long-rumored versions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for Sony's consoles.

Citing sister publication Official PlayStation Magazine as its source, 1Up is reporting that Bethesda Softworks' PC and Xbox 360 open-world role-playing game is headed for both the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 3. The article states that the PS3 edition of the game will include new content, including the introduction of the Knights of the Nine, a new faction that players will be able to join, much as they would the Fighter's Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. The PS3 version will also have new characters, locations, armor, and weapons.

As for the PSP version of the game, it apparently isn't a straight port. The game will reportedly be called The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion, and will be set in a different place than its home console and PC brethren. The Elder Scrolls Travels is the same designation given to versions of previous portable Elder Scrolls games that appeared on mobile phones and the Nokia N-Gage.

The PSP and PS3 editions of the games were first rumored in April, when a poster on a gaming message board revealed what he said was a Bethesda "release list," with Oblivion set for a November 6 release on the two systems. Rumors were stoked again in July when a product listing for Oblivion on PS3 showed up on GameStop.

[UPDATE] Bethesda has since confirmed release dates for the two games. Oblivion will be a launch title for the PS3 when it launches in the US November 17, and The Elder Scrolls Travels will arrive for the PSP in the spring.

The games will be co-published by Ubisoft in Europe and Australia. Oblivion is scheduled to be a European PS3 launch title in March 2007, and The Elder Scrolls Travels for the PSP is set for a spring release in Europe.

why hasn't Gamespot listed this game as 'cancelled' yet? It isn't coming out - ever. Please remove it from your PSP database.

Unfortanetely, I do not think Oblivion will ever come out on PSP. it is like the strategy game "Black & White" that was announced on PSP. They kept delaying the date till finally they cancelled the coming out of this game on PSP. I guess they get over ambitious and can not fit the right elements into UMD format or they do not like what they did get into UMD. This will probably happen with Oblivion, as on PC it is a huge file and game. Nevertheless I hope they find a solution and do not cancel it out !!

Chances are that when/if the game freakin' comes out it will be completely different than its console versions, sort of like a stripped down version of Oblivion. Not to mention that it's been around two years since this article was written. Sheesh.

It could be good theoretically, morrowind was on 1cd, so they can fit enough info onto UMD, just depends if they put the right info on it
