Advent Children wins award

Final Fantasy film nabs inaugural Best Anime Feature award at first-ever American Anime Awards at New York Comic Con.

Martin Scorsese's The Departed wasn't the only film this weekend being honored as the best among its peers. Square Enix has announced that the CG film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment won the award for Best Anime Feature at the first American Anime awards, which took place at the New York Comic Con.

The movie, based on the popular 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII, was released in the US in April on DVD and UMD, the proprietary format for the PlayStation Portable. The film featured the voice talents of Rachael Leigh Cook, Mena Suvari, and Steve Burton and was directed by series veteran Tetsuya Nomura.

Meh...it was highly-produced fluff. VII has the weakest story out of the recent FF games (I'd say VI-XII), except perhaps in the case of IX. Actually, that game had great characters and stuff, but it didn't have much of a plot at all...huh.

The plot was kind of non-existent, and I definitely would have liked to have had more time spent on the other cast members -just replacing some of The Turk's scenes with more of the core party fighting the enemy and the monsters- and more compelling villains, but honestly, who the hell would have bought this if it was 90 minutes of the characters talking?

People wanted an action movie, and that's what this is. The graphics, and action sequences were fantastic, and honestly, that's what mattered here.

Im sorry. Advent Children was a big load of overhyped crap that was just put out for Square Enix to make another billion. It was good looking, but thats about it. Plot was crap.

Well even though most had seen the Japanese version, it still did well in terms of sales.

I had to order mine in because it wasn't on the shelves meaning that some shops still weren't taking it seriously enough to respect it. While other dvds were pushed in your face.

I thought it was a great conclusion to a great story, even an excellent extension instead of just retelling the original story.

There’ll always be someone somewhere who is unhappy for whatever reason. But then you know what they say; “you can’t please everyone”

Having said that it’s about the majority. In an ideal world things should be appealing to everyone and getting their approval. But we don’t live in a ideal world so we don’t mind a few sad faces here and there.

    Ha…ha…ha…

Theshoveller - I've got that flack for ya, though it is meant sheerly for the fun of debate. I hope you're not disappointed. ^_^

I agree that the balance of plot and combat was a bit off. There were too many fight scenes and some were a bit longer than needed. However, I feel that the inclusion of said "Superhuman" attacks is important. Mainly because Sephiroth and Cloud -are- superhuman (in regards to the Jenova cells and the exposure to the lifestream), Vincent's essentially a biological weapon, Red XIII is an ancient cat-species and Cait-Sith is a possessed stuffed animal. My point being that a small percentage of the cast are "Just human" if you will. Without the superhuman element, Sephiroth would have destroyed the planet in the game, and very likely destroyed it in the movie. That's because Sephiroth is essentially a god (hence his name) and Cloud is his counterbalance. The others were cameo-cannon fodder. Just there for the crazy-awesome CG fight shots. If you are looking for physics realism, you might want to try a movie that doesn't have the word "Fantasy" in it's title.

Spirits Within had almost too much plot, and the sad part was the plot wasn't that great. Balancing this, they crammed combat into AC at the expense of some plot. In terms of a movie studio, they're still working out the kinks, though I must say not bad for only their first two attempts. In the event of a third FF movie, I think we may start to see something a little bit more fine-tuned, as it does seem like at least they are catching the mistakes they do make and learning from them.

Once again this is all opinion. That being said, I really enjoy watching both AC and SW and I hope that the bit of success they had with AC will inspire them to make a third, even better movie.

I think this film should have more awards than just that. Sure beats anything Pixar is putting out. Sure Pixar makes you laugh, but that's it. We are more than ready for CG to break out of just making us laugh.

Honestly, I didn't like the movie that much. In my opinion, it was a little outlandish and before anyone starts giving me a bunch of reasons how it's exactly like the game, or anything else like that I understand it's a little hard to make something like Meteor Rain believable. I just think instead of half the fights in the movie being done the way they were (what with superhuman moves and "limit breaks" being in them), I think they should have tried for a more realistic approach to the fights. I can understand a person flying across a small room from a strong punch or kick, but flying across the length of a church? It's the things like that that made me not like it a whole lot. Also, in my opinion, I think the plot could have been a little more pertaining to the game, instead of, "Look at them, they were in the game! And here's another guy from the game! Now play these games to get more stuff and give us money!"

Again, I know I'll catch flack for this, especially since not too many people liked it, but I thought as a movie, the other Final Fantasy movie was much better. It may not have had anything to do with Final Fantasy games in general, but as far as movies go, I'd rather watch guys in cool-looking hi-tech suits shoot things instead of a bunch of people jumping into the air defying physics every ten minutes.
