Bubble Bobble blows onto PSPs

Rising Star brings bubble-popping dinosaurs to Sony's handheld with new gameplay elements.

UK-based Rising Star today announced that it is publishing Bubble Bobble Evolution for the PSP. The game is the latest iteration of the popular franchise, and the first for Sony's handheld.

Bubble Bobble Evolution will feature the classic gameplay of the series, pitting enemies against heroes Bub and Bob, who are armed with...bubbles. However, in addition to having you trap foes in spheres, Rising Star is adding some new elements.

The game will feature three screens on a "spindle," which the player can move between. Puzzle solving is added to the mix, as gamers will explore the three screens to get items needed for use in other screens.

"This isn't Bubble Bobble as fans of the series are used to," says the game's producer, Tony Byus. "This is an entirely new game, and with these puzzle elements included, it is literally an evolution of the original game design concept."

Rising Star has not announced a release date for Bubble Bobble Evolution.

I have to admit my reaction is a bit mixed, especially with the sample image in the article. Why don suits, I wonder? ;p But aesthetics aside, I am also a bit hesitant to say their evolution in gameplay would be the best. Yet it does sound promising. Let's just hope the "puzzle-solving" doesn't detract from the bubble-blowing and idyllic bouncing of the original.

I suspect the spindle just means cycling through as if going into different rooms, though by description it sounds like you have 3 screens shown on the PSP at once and you jump into each. That's a bit crazy because PSP screen though large is not that large. But I would like to see something like my first impression, because that would make the game look truly dynamic.

Either case, I salute Rising Star for its courage to add innovation to a classic game. Good luck!

    Oh, 22nd. ;p

Considering that a lot of the psp games aren't 50 dollars...
Also, I don't think Rising Star would be stupid enough to do that. They know what price to sell it at; it won't be 50.

Great the bubble series kicks ass, and a mix with puzzles should add some more interesting elements in here

I might be excited....except that I've played every version that I could get my hands on and am kinda bored with it. I'll have to wait and see if this new version has enough new elements.

Bub and Bob are human. They were turned into dragons at the start of the original game, and returned to human form at the conclusion. Their dragon forms are just more popular/identifiable, and thus is the reason for their use in Puzzle Bobble and other spin-offs.
