Sega rallies on PSP

Bugbear Entertainment developing handheld version of newest installment in Sega's Sega Rally Revo racing series.

Despite being an arcade classic, Tetsuya Mizuguchi's 1995 classic Sega Rally Championship hasn't received much attention outside of the arcade. At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sega Rally Revo was announced, which heralded the arrival of North American console versions on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Today comes word that Sega is expanding that list to include the PlayStation Portable. Sega Rally Revo is slated to arrive this fall on all platforms.

While Sega's in-house Racing Studio is handling the next-gen Sega Rally Revo versions, Bugbear Entertainment has been tasked with developing for the handheld. No stranger to the racing scene, Bugbear's recent credits include vehicular-mayhem racers FlatOut and FlatOut 2.

Details are still sparse on how different the PSP version will be from its console counterparts. However, Guy Wilday, studio director for SEGA Racing Studio, did confirm the handheld edition of the off-road racer will have online play. "With the addition of multiplayer wireless and online multiplayer, there's scope for players to show off their skills against their friends," he said in a statement.

Sega Rally Revo has not yet been priced or rated.

It's so funny to read what the DS trolls have to say here like PSP has a bad LCD screen, they are so retarded. And that the Psp has crappy controls, total stupidity. This game as all games looks and plays so much damn better than a tinkertoy DS. DS users get a clue you bunch of morons, stop thinking that your outdated system can't hold a candle to the power that is the PSP.

If they could just eliminate the load times of the PSP completely, I'd buy one again, but since they can't, I'm not going to bother with it. I owned one for a few days and that was enough to show me that it wasn't worth the money.

By the way, piracy doesn't really kill anything. People who pirate software have no intention of buying it in the first place, so the "lost sale" argument holds no water. The problem with the PSP is that it's hardware designed for specs, not games. It simply doesn't work as well as it should in execution.

There are plenty of games I'd love to play on a sleek PSP but since the overall gaming experience is pretty crappy due to some basic design elements, there's no point.

Good to see the PSP getting more games. But realy these ports of Console games come to the system way too often. I mean this year we have about 24 ports announced for the PSP. The good news is we also have 12 exculsive games and those are the ones to get.

This is GREAT news. I'll be getting this for the 360 and the PSP.... Can't get enough good rally games. Don't need any more crappy RPG's, the market has enough. More good racing games with lots of options is what is needed.

I'm definately not getting a PSP after rumors that Sony might remake it. I want a PSP, but I don't want to get one and then find out like a month or two later that the new and improved one just came out.

The PSP is like the Dreamcast was. Great ideas, notorious piracy, definite problems, and somewhat same games.

Even though I prefer my DS, I tip my hat to the PSP. Mostly for the HB.

Hopefully fun. My biggest complaint with PSP racers is the LCD refresh of the screen leads to motion blur, which is bad for fast twitch reflex action.
