Dave Mirra returns to gaming

Crave Entertainment brings the Miracle Boy back to consoles later this year with BMX Challenge for the PSP.

Reviewers weren't the only ones left with a bad taste in their mouths after the drowning Acclaim launched the adult-oriented BMX XXX in 2002. BMX superstar Dave Mirra, whose name had originally been attached to the game, sued the publisher for an array of reasons associated with the game, including injury to reputation.

The two sides eventually patched up their differences and were ready to keep putting out Mirra games until his contract ran out in 2011, but Acclaim declared bankruptcy before another product bearing the Mirra name could be released. It was then that Crave Entertainment picked up the rights to the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX and ATV Quad Power Racing series for no less than $120,000.

Now Crave is looking to get a return on its investment--the company today announced Dave Mirra BMX Challenge for the PlayStation Portable, the first new Dave Mirra game in more than two years. BMX Challenge will feature 17 levels in nine different environments, nine bikes, customizable characters, four-player wireless play, and, of course, Dave Mirra.

Crave is currently planning on an October release for Dave Mirra BMX Challenge. No rating has been announced as yet, but the game will carry a $29.99 retail price upon release.

It's too bad Z-Axis probably won't be behind this, as they were bought up by Activision a few years ago. Hopefully the game turns out well regardless, as Agressive Inline and Dave Mirra 2 were great games, only topped by Tony Hawk 3.

Heh, you got to love the fact that the game was so bad that Dave Mirra actualy sued the publisher. I wonder if developers will ever even try to make a unique PSP experience. I mean c'mon, sure the DS is innovative, but fully functional 3D on a portable is innovative as well.

The mirra line of BMX games r just another rip-off of the long dead Tony hawk series. Look in american wasteland they put bike riding in it so why would u wana spend 30 $ on another rehash of the same bike game you have played for years ?

As long as it has ragdoll and wipeout mode like mirra 2 it should be worth the money for me. I still play Dave Mirra 2 on the xbox. Wipeou mode owns!! XD

I liked the first Dave Mirra game, but the second wasn't nearly as good. I was really looking forward to 3, but then it turned into BMX XXX (or BMXXX as I call it), and I lost interest.

yeah dm 2 was sweet, i did all but like 2 of the challenges in that game. That game was way better than the tony hawk games at the time, it had so many cool features like trick modifiers, ragdolls, hard challenges, and huge levels.

Mirra 2 and Aggressive Inline (used the fantastic new engine they were going to put in the new Mirra game) were some of my favorite extreme sports games. Let's hope Crave doesn't make a crappy game and hope it sells because of the name.
