UK game charts: July 23-29

Cars ends Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories' five weeks at the top, and a platinum release of The Sims 2 helps it re-enter the chart.

After taking the UK all-format games chart for a five-week joyride, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories has finally relinquished control of the top slot. Its replacement, THQ's movie franchise Cars, parked itself atop the chart during the week of July 23, coinciding with the film's release in UK cinemas.

While the battle for number one has produced a new victor, the rest of the top 10 remains largely static. There have been no new entries, with Formula One 06 limping in as this week's highest new entry at number 14. Take-Two's Prey made a dramatic slide from number seven to number 17, while The Sims 2 made a reappearance in the top 10 at number eight.

This week's chart has been characterised by nonmovers, with New Super Mario Bros., Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, 2006 FIFA World Cup, and Over the Hedge all holding on to the same positions as the previous week. In the post-World Cup era, with the football season yet to begin in England, Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (which is on budget release in the UK) stayed two places higher at seven than EA's 2006 FIFA World Cup, which held on to ninth.

Next week's release schedule is relatively low key, with only Sony's SingStar Anthems and Forbidden Siren 2 on PlayStation 2 promising to make a dent on the chart. With the release of Cars in the cinema, the game's chances of making it a second week at the top of the UK games chart look fairly strong.

No 1, how come there are no Xbox or Xbox 360 games in the charts? Not that i am a huge fan of Xbox just that i thought they were vying for the no. 1 homeconsole spot.
No 2, Gamecube probably hasn't had a game worth buying released this month, and also in the Uk there are no Gamecube games for sale. In Gamestation there were 10 gamecube games...10!!!! and three of them were pikmin!
No 3, glad to see DS doing well and PS2.

the reason gc dont sell well is cos the damn shops barely stock anythin, both of the game stores and the 1 gamestation store in my shoppin centre have tiny sections for gc rest is ps2/xbox and preowned ps2/xbox

the GameCube doesn't sell, in my experience, because the games are so massively expensive and never come down in price.

nobody is buying the GC but you can't find games for it anywhere, and when you do, you find Mario Power Tennis preowned for £30!

i'd love to support the sales of GameCube games, but i can't because the games are so expensive... i want to get Mario Smash Football but it's too much atm... i'm not paying £30 for it.

It's true that the GameCube is cheap now, but two decent games are gonna set you back £60, even if they're games that are over a year old, like Mario Power Tennis!

i have 5 games for my GameCube, compared with 31 on my Xbox, 17 for my PS2 and 24 DS games.... i know that if they'd actually bring the prices of GameCube games down a bit, i'd definitely have at least twice the amount of games i currently have for it.

there's such a slow trickle of games coming out at the moment that any new game released will hit number 1. wait until september 1st and 8th and we'll see saints row and dead rising at number 1

Brain Age and probably Over The Hedge are the only games to deserve to be in this chart. At least, Cars isn't in half of the top like in that other chart.

neither of these games are that good, gta only got to number one because its a gta game, and cars only got to number 1 because the movie it was based off of was good.

And Liberty City Stories is finally knocked off the top of the UK game charts by.....Cars?! I'm sorry but I don't see what is so special about Cars. Cars is simply "ok" but hell, I felt the same way about Liberty City Stories and that was on top for weeks. But we're going to see Cars on top for a while because the movie was just released over in the UK. So, let's get used to seeing Cars over in the UK now....*sigh* When it ends in the US, it starts in the UK....

Cars is an awesome movie, kids are bound to love it so they want the game, and the game isn't half bad actually, try playing the game before criticising it!
