Harry Potter gets Half-Blooded movie tie-in

Big-screen premiere of boy wizard's next adventure to be accompanied by video game versions from Electronic Arts.

Like a string of handkerchiefs pulled from a magician's sleeve, Electronic Arts has produced a seemingly never-ending line of Harry Potter games and spin-offs on virtually every possible platform. Beyond the games based on the blockbuster movies, EA has also released Quidditch World Cup--a fantasy sports game based on a competition that played a significant part in the Potter books--and a variety of mobile phone games like Find Scabbers and Mastering Magic. There was even a massively multiplayer online Harry Potter game planned at one point.

In keeping with tradition, EA today announced that it will be bringing out a full line of games based on the upcoming film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Timed to coincide with the film's November release, the games will arrive on the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, PC, Mac, and mobile phones.

EA's UK-based Bright Light studio is handling development on the game and looking to improve on previous installments of the series "with a particular focus on the unique control system of Nintendo's Wii," according to the publisher. In addition to the expected wizard duels, players will be able to create magical elixirs in a potion-creating class, as well as hop aboard a broomstick to take part in quidditch matches.

While the novel is the sixth of seven installments in J.K. Rowling's wildly popular series of books, Half-Blood Prince is the sixth of eight Potter films. Faced with the prospect of tying up all the series' loose ends in one film (and with seeing the hugely successful series come to a close), Warner Bros. Pictures has decided to split the final book in the series--Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows--into two different films, set for release in November 2010 and May 2011.

i just wanted to clear some things up for those people that haven't a clue to whats going on here...

first of all, there is going to be 8 movies because they're splitting the final book into two films. they are doing this because there are pretty big events in Deathly Hallows, they want to tell the story well and not leave anything out.

P.S. cant wait to see how they work with the Wii on this one! : )

I liked Order of the Phoenix. Some things about it were annoying, but it ranks more like 7.3 the 5.0. Hopefully, this game will improve those things that were bad in Order of the Phoenix. Namely the long wanderings and lack of duels.

Wow, another HP movie means another set of HP games from EA.

And yes, there are some decent HP games, but if you take into account the fact that about 5 games come out for each movie, and only one of them(games) is actually good....... you see why many of us aren't jumping for joy here.

the quality of all the Harry Potter games made so far varied depending which part of the movie it was based on and which version it was

Personally I would also like to see Mass Effect style RPG. But most importantlyHARRY POTTER LEGO! why they still didn't make one of these is a mystery, star wars was just awesome and I can't wait to play Indy and Batman this year MAKE LEGO HARRY POTTER GAMES PLEASE!

I have yet to see a positive response from gamers, that I know, concerning the Harry Potter games. Contrary to what I see, the games must be doing well because they are continually being created. It's about the green. And it seems that the HP games are bringing in enough of it.

I wish for once they would make a HP RPG what rivaled the quality of FF. It would sell -- millions...

i say don't even look at the movie except for artistic style maybe...and try to follow the book as best as they can...it's kinda hard to make it into a game without being pretty lame.

one of the books is going to be split into two movies...not sure which one though...that's why it's eight and not seven.

Like they really had to put that under "news". Everyone saw that coming from a mile away. EA better give Bright Lights enough time to make a good game, or it'll wind up just most movie games: boring, dumb, and just plain pathetic.

who would not make a great Harry Potter game, as the books are so awesome and the films are great (not so great as the books, but, still, great)?! oh, i forgot about EA...yes, EA would.

there are so many things that would make Harry Potter a fantastic game...if EA could do it right...at least Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows!

This isn't news, its common knowledge. Every Potter movie has had a game, people should know this without even looking to EA for information.

I'm just waiting for them to actually make a decent harry potter game.

Hopefully they won't give you control of most of the ending of the game like in OotP. I loved not being able to control what would have been the coolest part of the game!!!

I kind of liked the underperforming OotP Wii game from last year but it was just a little too small. I was expecting something GTA size with GTA amounts of things to do.
And unfortunately the rewards for collectibles weren't very rewarding. This one sounds like the next step up. Hopefully the broom wont just be fro quiddich.

    >_> and how old will D-Rad be? 20-something? That means the sixth film should come out either late 2008 to early 2009...

Harry Potter Books > Movies > Games. Why they are splitting the last book into 2 films is beyond me but all I know is...the Deathly Hallows was SO graphic and so many people die in it that I personally think it should be rated R but that may be why the are splitting it, to do some MAJOR editing!
