Sega goes Ultimate-ly retro

Forty first-party titles to be featured on new compilation for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, set for release in 2009.

It's a clear sign that Christmas is approaching when there are endless adverts for greatest hits and compilation albums on TV. Now Sega is getting into the compilation spirit with the announcement that the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection in North America) is in development--but the game won't be in the shops until next year.

Many gamers fondly remember their gaming days on the Sega Mega Drive (released as the Sega Genesis in the US), and the legacy of the 29 million-selling console lives on, particularly in Europe. Many of the games have since been remade or updated for newer hardware--Ecco the Dolphin was released last year for Xbox Live Arcade, for example--but now, Sega is pulling together its first-party titles into a new release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A previous collection was released for the PlayStation 2 and PSP in 2007.

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is being developed for Sega by Backbone Entertainment and will feature "over 40" first-party Sega titles, "reproduced with the utmost detail and accuracy to commend their originals," according to the publisher. The classic titles, including Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2, and 3, as well as Space Harrier and Streets of Rage 1,2, and 3, will also be able to output in 720p for the high-definition gaming generation. The collection will also include bonus 8-bit and arcade games.

The game is scheduled for release globally in early 2009.

Sonic CD SUKED anything involving a CD before the dreamcast was utterly horrible. Def Buy though regardless and they most def need Shining Force. Those were the top of the sega rpg life. Eternal Champions, Golden Axe, Shinobi, X-men 1&2, Of course Sonic always can't be beat.

Hopefully this will end up being a bette compilation than Gems was, Sonic CD was good, but the rest in the collection was disappointing and they really seem to love forcing Vector Man in their collections.
Shame none of the Thunderforce games and Soliei isn't in the compilation by the looks of things, Thunderforce series, Soliei and Shining Force 3 would have been better additions than a few of the duds of the compilation like Vector Man and E-Swat and a few others, and where's Afterburner? They may not have been incredible, but they were fun games.

There seems to be quite a few of these mega drive collections out I'd much rather see a Sega Saturn collection or even just putting some Saturn and Dreamcast games on PSN/XBLA will do

way to go and release a compilation on games that you can play for free using an emulator. if they are keeping the 2d graphics which they are probably doing it is not worth it. i love a lot of the games on here but not enough to pay money for them AGAIN if the graphics arent improved. There are so many games that could use a next-gen makeover with pretty 1080P graphics. There are countless games that i could lose days of my life to that were insanely simple and if remade today with better graphics, i would gladly blow $60 on them.
