PSP shipments hit 50 million

Sony handheld surpasses major milestone in four years, three hardware iterations; more than 200 million games shipped.

Sony's original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign combined to sell more than 100 million systems. In making its challenge to the long-standing handheld market dominance of Nintendo, Sony might have been ecstatic to see the PlayStation Portable enjoy even half that success.

And that's about exactly where the PSP is today. Sony announced that it has shipped 50 million of the systems (PSP-1000, 2000, and 3000 models cumulatively) to retailers worldwide. Additionally, 200 million games for the system have been sold in to retailers since the PSP's December 2004 debut in Japan.

Despite the system's sizable installed user base, the PSP faces a number of issues. It was the only major console or handheld not represented in the industry-tracking NPD Group's list of the 10 best-selling games of 2008. Furthermore, no PSP game has managed to crack even the monthly top 10 list since March of 2008, when God of War: Chains of Olympus placed fifth and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII landed in sixth.

There is one game that will crack the monthly top ten list once again... RESISTANCE Retribution. This game is great, I have played over 6 hours and it has really caught my attention. I am amazed it did not get a 9+ eval, considering that Syphon Filter did. The PSP has not really been the greatest thing on game support... but the continuous iteration of the console and the great games it has should continue to gain some ground on the market. After all, it might not be as successful as the the GB, GBA, Nintendo DS, DS Lite... but it has been there too little to catch up. Then again, those who have one, can provide testimony of the quality and power of the smalles PS out there... a true Playing Portable Station, with true power and still with unexplored potential.

As a gamer with quite a few miles under my belt, i'd say that's a feat in itself for sony, especially in cracking an otherwise Nintendo dominated market, and more importantly surviving! Only thing that does let the PSP down - Lack of games, c'mon sony seriously stop screwing with your playstation network and fancy DLC and pull ya fingers out, there is sony's one prob for ya ppl, they can't have 2 consoles going at once, they can't manage it well enough, they cancel the old gen so they can focus on the next, the same is happening now with ps3 and psp. Guess which one will die first.

ill applaud the psp for staying alive with stiff competitition from nintendo. its pretty large feat, considering that other handhelds simply died within months against nintendo. very impressive.

I never liked the PSP. It was cool at first, but the games just aren't fun to play. They should have added an extra joystick for FPS games. Currently all I do with the PSP is put music and youtube on it.

I'd have to admit I haven't bought any PSP games for a while (haven't gotten round to finishing the ones I've already purchased). There hasn't been many recent games I've wanted to buy

all i know is as far as gaming handhelds go psp is the more powerful beast, i remember sega game gear back in the day, had a tv ariel and everything!, gameboy was still that black/lime green effect, for old times sake,i liked the gameboy more than the ds, because gameboys were made for gaming in mind,ds was more innovative over the psp at the start not so sure now.

Many people saying the PSP does so much more than play games, the only problem for me is I have an iphone and it goes on the internet, makes phone calls, plays games, movies and loads of other stuff and of course its so much cooler than a PSP and most importantly, it fits into my pocket.

My PSP is used for 1 thing, to play games, it's why I bought it, unfortunately there are not many new releases for it. The DS on the other hand has lots of new releases every month.

i have ds and psp. ds is better. i remember i had not played either of them for a while and the ds still had the charge that was in the battery where as the psp the charge magically went out the battery without me touching it.

Nice one sony, shame it took four very long years to reach this milestone!!! Should of concentrated on the gaming side of things and not get lost with all the multimedia aspects of it!!!!

I think the reason Nintendo is doing so good is because they have alot of experience in the handheld community. When you think about it starting with the gameboy pocket back in the 90's, most of their software has been aimed at little kids ages from like idk 5-13. I had one at launch, i had super mario 64 DS, and spiderman 2, i eventually got ridge racer. And it seemed like the longest time that there was no good games out. As soon as i traded mine in i started hearing about mario games and was pissed that i did. I love my PSP but i have the same problem as most of you, not enough games. I hope they do release a second PSP, but i think this will turn out like the Sega Gamegear :\

All I can say is this: remember the first gen PSP, and how you could play homebrew without resorting to open up the thing and threatening to brick it? Sony seriously needs to look into putting that feature back in, because they haven't stopped the piracy anyway. They should look at it like any other tool, they wouldn't be supplying the software, just the means to play it. That was definitely a huge plus for the system back when they first put them out, just sayin'.
