E3 06: Scoping out the LACC

[UPDATE] The Los Angeles Convention Center continues to be adorned with banner ads as the show's opening day approaches. Check out our photo essay and video tour!

LOS ANGELES--While pictures and footage of activity inside the Los Angeles Convention Center are strictly forbidden until the show opens, interested gawkers and passersby can still get an eyeful of the event from outside the building. Sony's "Play Beyond" ads were particularly difficult to miss, but an array of other, more straightforward ads have been put up along the rest of the convention center's exterior.

Where the Sony ad dominates the West Hall entrance, Atari has claimed the high-profile spot above the South Hall to promote Neverwinter Nights 2 on the PC. The span of the concourse that runs between the two halls has been claimed by ads for Vivendi's Eragon, 2K Games' The Da Vinci Code, Epic Games' Gears of War, and Midway's Stranglehold. Midway also claimed the opposite side of the concourse with a banner for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

For a closer look at the E3 preparations surrounding the LACC, check out the very first Video News Spot, hosted by Tim Surette.

All I can say is the Xbox 360 games out and the ones coming out in the future look great. Looking forward to seeing the Gears of War preview on e3. PS3 I am wondering what the graphics will be like since last years were on a simulator. Sony won't let us down though especially when they have been toting it so much lately. If it does suck screw them and I am an Xbox man for life.

They dont really need ad's. Anyone who plays games knows what this is.

Personally, I think Sony needs the Ad's becuase they had so many fans of the PS2 that they need this hype. Also, I think that the PS3 may not be as good looking as expected, nothing personal, its just that all we saw last year was trailers, who knows, Killzone could of been a cutscene. WE SHALL SEE!

I can't wait to see what Sony has to offer, plus I hope Atari makes a comeback. It would be nice to see Atari come up with some cool stuff as well as I came from a generation that grew up with the Atari 2600.

i think it's comedy that the army is advertising so heavily in gaming industry. i guess the graphics in iraq are better and there's no lag. i guess they see a link between the brainless violence in these wonderful games and the order of war. lets get our troops home b4 the ps3 release for their sake.

...oh and this marketing strat seems unethical btw.

the reason xbox hasnt really had any movement on the sony markey share is the fact that the last 10 years sony has been know for 3d gaming. there are synonimous with be related to gaming now. Its more expexted for microsoft to make a game console rather than sony. Sony did and the ps1 out sold the xbox in 2005. that speaks for its self in japan that even the ps2 outsells the xbox 360. it will take 2 or 3 xbox generations to equal the amount of ps2 sold in the last 5 years. xbox is dead after less than five and the ps2 could survive at least 10 years like the ps1. sony knows they cant abandon a 100 million ps2 users like crapsoft did with the xbox 18millions users. i dont like mircrosoft gaming devison, i like the pc microsoft. i hate crapbox but competition is good for the consumer.

I guess the reason why Sony is pasting all of these ads is probably because their success predominantly rides on the success of the PS3 and Playstation products.

My Response: Looking at the pics above...seems like Micrsoft is advertising Gears of War. so i think that fixes the problem....also...if you look at the building from far away...it looks like a giant N64 Cartridge.

I think Nintendo has enough momentum with the name change and their revolutionary controller, Sony needs to reassure people that the PS3 will be released within a resonable timeframe
