New Dragon Balls bouncing to handhelds

Atari prepping two spring releases based on the popular anime for portable platforms; one headed for PSP, one headed for DS.

Atari may be in the process of cutting costs by selling its studios and licenses to other game publishers, but one property it isn't giving up is the Dragon Ball Z license. The anime has been the basis of several games for consoles and handhelds alike and will be the subject of two more this year.

First up will be Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai: Another Road for the PlayStation Portable. The game is the sequel to the series' debut on the PSP, last March's Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai. Another Road adds a new story, an enhanced fighting system, and more than 50 new fighting skills and ultimate attacks to the 3D fighting game. The game is currently scheduled to be released in March.

The second portable Dragon Ball Z offering is Dragon Ball Z Harukanaru Densetsu for the Nintendo DS. Unlike Another Road's 3D fighting core, Harukanaru Densetsu combines card-based gameplay with role-playing elements. The game is expected to be released this spring.

Uh, actually neither Shin Budokai nor Another Road are ports. Shin Budokai took the engine from 3 (thankfully, I was scared it would be the Tenkaichi engine) but the story followed that of the Janemba movie and involved a smaller roster with a few new characters (namely Pikkon). Another Road is going to follow a What If story involving Trunks, which should be interesting enough to make me want to read the text. Just because the games will be using the engine from 3 does not make them ports considering that the stories are different, not to mention the fact that the fighting engine made some significant changes (namely the removal of the capsule system and the fact that the fighting was a lot more streamlined). All in all, the changes are enough to merit it being called it's own game.

All the people complaining about the card-based game have probably never played Legend of the SSJ which has a slight card-element and is the best DBZ game ever (imho)

Was that game for the SNES? Because i played a good bit of it. That was a pretty awesome game. I loved the whole RPG thing about it.

Cool. Hopefully they add an online mode and fix the story mode for Shin Budokai.

I also agree with ChitoKiryoku on Legend of the SSJ, fun game.

Thats a cool way to do it. I played Metal Gear Acid and its card based system was fun so I think this can be done well too.
