Japan game charts: April 17-23

At long last, a non-brain-training game takes the top slot--but the Nintendo DS continues to rule the charts.

There was a change at the top of the Japanese game charts during the week of April 17. After ruling the roost for over a month, Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training was removed from the number-one position.

Its successor, Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance, was a non-brain-training game, and it wasn't for the DS. The week's second- and third-place finishers--the expansion Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan and the spin-off Dragon Quest: Shounen Yangus no Fushigi na Daibouken--weren't even on a Nintendo platform. Both were PlayStation 2 favorites (apparently).

However, just because the DS didn't win, place, or show didn't mean it wasn't well represented on the top 10. Five games on the list were for Nintendo's dual screen handheld, which continues to take Japan by storm: Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training (fourth), Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (seventh), Animal Crossing: Wild World (eighth), Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke (ninth), and Pokémon Rangers (10th).

Smack-dab in the middle of the chart were two more PS2 titles--Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai (fifth) and Okami (sixth), the much-anticipated and recently previewed adventure game from Capcom and Clover Studio. However, no PSP titles were to be found in the top 10.

The week of April 17 also saw an Xbox 360 game almost make it into the top 10. Ninety-Nine Nights, the upcoming fantasy action game from legendary designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi's studio Q Entertainment, came in 11th place.

it's crazy how they're all about weird brain games and rpgs in japan, while in the states most people couldnt care less about these games. in the states it's all about blood and guts and edginess (with such big sellers as GOW, devil may cry, RE4, etc)

I think EvIlKiNgKoOpA was rite, maybe only japanese that really know the essence of "fun" in "games" nowadays. the rest just rely on pixel porn and brainless chaos..... n "new" gameplay too, which oftenly only being introduced once in the long list of franchise-to-be if it become a hit.....

American games are all good. Theres nothing bad with them. They were made to fit the most playable and realistic manner. This is why Fps have blood and gore and aim and shoot. because thats what really happens when you shoot in real life.

And we north americans dislike many japanese games because its just plain wierd to us. Like all the cat girls, gundams, Super Saiyans, feminine males, awkward japanese jokes, super cliche plots and pop theme songs are big turn offs indeed to the general audience. And some anime shows also dont help the situation.

Even though RPG dominates in japanese games, hell ive enjoyed many, but in my experince ive enjoyed the american rpgs the most( Elderscrolls, Baldurs Gate, Knights of old republic, Fable, Jade empire)

Actually there can be alot of challenge in a FPS. Try playing COD2 on Veteran. It is no walk in the park. But you're probably right, they are still pretty brainless.

So why should we care about what sells in Japan? They do not define the industry. Get over it.

american gamers have the same taste over,FPS, BLOOD, GORE and the SAME violent game, dont get me wrong,i like all of those in my game, but i am tired of seeing it over and over and over in the same genre game, like QUAKE
    it's like DOOM 3,to me,BATTLEFIELD 2 is like GHOST RECON - AW
teens in the US makes these games popular because its simple to play
all they do is aim and shoot,no type of challenge at all in those games
sure online might make it better, but i also point out RPG,which to me are
all the same as an FPS game,so i feel that as we AMERICANs hate
RPG's(well most american)the JAPANESE hate alot of the same FPS games
so in a nut shell, they can make great games, because to me the best
games come out of JAPAN,due to the good hard working game companys
for example these are good, very good and i really can enjoy for hours
ZELDA - RESIDENT EVIL - METAL GEAR SOLID - FINAL FANTASY - MARIO
METROID - ONIMUSHA - FIRE EMBLEM - PAC-MAN - MEGA MAN - STREET_FIGHTER - TEKKEN - BUST A MOVE - EARTHBOUND - DEVIL MAY CRY - (JAPANESE GAMES I LOVE).........................and these are american games that made me see the small talent american game company they have..................GTA3(AND ONLY GT3) - RACHET'N'CLANK - CALL OF DUTY - GOD OF WAR - SIMS(AMERICAN GAMES I LIKED)and i didnt pick a certain game because i know the game series is a solid winner other that sport games and clone FPS shooters fall short of what could of been done well
so yea..SCREW ALL THE BIAS BASTARDS

Wow, their list is off. FFXII came in at No. 15, while the English Brain Training came at No. 9. Animal Crossing was at No. 8

^^ Yeah, I hope they change that soon, but it's understandable to misread one letter/number (PSP to PS2). Anyway, that is a good list, and I hope Okami does really well (I like all the games Clover has made so far, including the original VJ).

Shin Budokai is a PSP game... and it's number 5. Yet the article said there were no PSP games that made the top 10? Tor Thorsen made a boo-boo.

Not wow-inspiring or unexpected at all.

You'd think people would finally smarten up and get over differing tastes.

There's enough Mother/Earthbound fans out there that'd snatch up that game without a moment's notice. Nintendo just has to realize it.

Not convinced? Do a google check for Earthbound/Mother-based fan sites. There's more than you'd think. Not to mention the amount of people who've already downloaded and are playing the Japanese ROM, but yet cannot even read Japanese!

    ...HINT HINT, Nintendo.
