BIA storming PSPs

Ubisoft's acclaimed WWII series will arrive on Sony's portable this fall in the form of Brothers in Arms D-Day. First screens inside.

Today Ubisoft announced that it is bringing its popular World War II franchise Brothers in Arms to the PlayStation Portable. The new game, Brothers in Arms D-Day, is being developed by Ubisoft Shanghai (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent) and Gearbox Software, maker of the console and PC installments in the series.

Brothers in Arms D-Day will feature the same squad-based first-person shooter action as its console counterparts, even though the FPS genre has so far fared poorly on the PSP. However, Ubisoft claims that D-Day will have "all-new controls specific to the PSP system," which presumably means the control scheme has been optimized for the handheld's one-thumbstick layout.

Brothers in Arms D-Day follows the protagonists of the previous two Brothers in Arms console games: Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway. Players will strap on the boots of paratroopers Sergeant Matt Baker and Corporal Joe "Red" Hartsock, who were both real-life members of the US Army's elite 101st Airborne Division. The game will take place during the events of the Allied invasion of Normandy and will follow Baker's and Hartsock's squads to the French towns of Carentan and St. Sauveur.

Brothers in Arms D-Day will offer ad hoc wirelesss co-op play through a dozen different skirmish missions. The game will also offer new weapons, such as the bazooka, mortar, and MG42 machine gun. GameSpot will have more details on the game, which is set to ship this fall, as they become available.

If they're able to utilise a control-scheme to the likes of Syphon Filter and Battlefront II - that is, stable version of Coded Arms, then I think this game will do just fine in the controls department.

I just hope that there's some kind of infrastructure support; such concepts just beg for an online multiplayer mode.

regardless of how questionable the controls may be. even if its impossible just to get the hang of it... i'm buying this game. its going to be great! how many WWII games you think will come on the PSP anyway? (dont answer that) i love the BIA series! the load zones will probably take a bit... but who cares! just give it a chance before you judge it!

for christ sake its not even out yet and some of you are saying its going to be crap!
how would you know?? they said they adjusted the controls so it would work easier on the PSP! my guess is you walk around with the shape buttons, order your squad with the D pad, and look around with the analog stick. which is a pretty nice set up i think.
not that it matters, i'm buying it just to have the full BUA series... so far.

ok, i never liked WWII FPS games, the last game i played was Medal of Houner: the sun title (i forgot the name), and that game sucked, real bad for PSP fans to get a game like this.
thats why the DS is better, there no WWII games, yeas the graphic can be hard but ubi can can push the ds limit like MPH and make a WWII but luckly we don't have one.

TintedChimes - Didn't the N64 have one thumb-stick, yet managed to have perhaps the most popular console FPS ever? They can make it work, and while I agree two anaolg sticks would have been nice, there must have been some reason it wasn't added.

I blame the PSP and not the developers for not having great first person shooters. The one thumb-stick just doesn't work for FPS but companies will still try, at least they try. Stupid Sony! Should of made that second freaking thumbstick and I'll be fine, it surely would have made Me and My Katamari even better. Ahhh, just ranting and frustrated that all of these games are great in graphics but horrible in controls. We should throw dead bunnies and mutilated cats whoever thought that the PSP only requires one thumbstick!

    VERY GOOD on the matter.

    Reality Check:

    "The PSP sales are solid.
Game sales are making companies money.
Fanboys are blind, deaf, and dumb.
This looks like a fun game.

    Whoah... Does that cover it?

ALMOST, but you forgot one thing: There ARE some great PSP games. Fanboys need to wake up and smell the coffee (or games in this situation) "
