Atari Classics Evolve onto PSP

Publisher's latest compilation brings 11 esteemed games with new graphics, online leaderboards, multiplayer to Sony's handheld this fall; 60 other ports also packed in.

Atari has been releasing classic compilations of some of its most venerated games on various platforms for years. Most recently, the publisher has taken a different tack by offering single doses for updated versions of its classic games through Xbox Live Marketplace. Atari classics that have found their way to Microsoft's downloadable game service include Missile Command and Centipede, with Warlords, Asteroids, and others due out later this year.

Instead of simply porting old titles untouched, Atari's latest offering appears to be a compilation of Xbox Live-like enhanced favorites. Today, Atari announced that Atari Classics Evolved will be available for the PlayStation Portable this fall. The game will feature redux versions of Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Millipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout, Tempest, Warlords, and Pong.

As with the games most recently released through Xbox Live, Atari will be distinguishing its latest offerings with new "evolved modes." Aside from updating the graphics, the 11 evolved titles will feature global leaderboards and ad hoc multiplayer functionality.

Sweetening the deal, Atari Classics Evolved will also include more than 60 other games from the Atari 2600's catalog. Included in this most recent Atari classics compilation will be Yar's Revenge, Night Driver, Canyon Bomber, and Crystal Castles, among others.

Atari Classics Evolved has not yet been rated or priced. However, retro-game compilations typically sell at a price points lower than all-new titles.

    People do get this game it is *the boom* very well made,I will always love these games.

    my mom would absolutely LOVE this.....but I dont want her to play my psp a lot lol. I'll just get her geometry wars DS instead.

    Well, I suppose if Atari does it right they might actually gain enough momentum to make a comeback. They have just about nothing to lose anyway...

    The Witcher was good, I hear, so that's a first step. What's next is anyone's guess.

    Although I'm a classic arcade junkie, I'm skeptical about the PSP conversion. Imagine trying to play Missile Command with that little PSP nub. UGH! I would buy this if they were to throw in the Asteroids remake from a few years ago.

    An updated Battlezone? that would be great! I just think it should of had online play. But ad hoc is better than nothing! Still It might be the first ever classic style game collection I ever buy!

    This is a forum for video game fans who love gaming and are willing to pay for it. It is not a promotional site for copyright pirates. Please don't encourage people to download illegal ROMs to their PSPs. If you love your old games so much and want portable versions, then simply buy updated versions on the GBA or DS or whatnot. I'm sure you can afford them if you could afford the PSP. Thank you.

    I remember buying an Atari collection for my PS1 back in the day, and the problem with these compilations remains the same: Even though I still love the games (yes, I'm old) the majority of them were originally made for specific, analog controllers. The trackball-based gameplay of Centipede/Millipede and Missile Command, or the dial control of Breakout, Tempest, Warlords and Pong doesn't translate well at all to a digital gamepad. The dual analog sticks from Battlezone came closest to mapping to the dualshock's two analog sticks, but even that didn't feel quite right. I can't image what you'd do on the PSP. You'd probably use the digital pad and face buttons for movement, and shoulder buttons for firing. Unfortunately, controls like that would completely lack the precision needed for playing the game.

    Games like this shouldn't be released! If anyone thinks that breakout or missile command is fun to play these days (for at least more than 15 mins nostalgia time) then they need to get out more.

    It'll be a game that gets bought, played for an hour tops and then either ends up on the shelf or on eBay.

    Atari should try making some new games for a change and stop living in the past and relying on it's old stuff to get the company off it's butt. I'm sorry but, just like all the other counsels I've played the old stuff and I still own the old games I'm not going to pay for a game I bought ten years ago twice.
