Activision goes classic on PSP

Publisher to release collection of Atari 2600 games on Sony's portable; confirmed titles include Pitfall, Kaboom!, Stampede.

The days of a single joystick with a lone button may be long gone, but Activision is banking that the appeal of games that use simple controls isn't. The publisher today announced Activision Hits Remixed for the PlayStation Portable, a collection of the company's games from the days of the Atari 2600.

The compilation, due for release this fall, will include more than 40 Activision offerings from the classic console--games such as the vine-swinging, alligator-stomping, scorpion-jumping Pitfall! Also confirmed for the package will be Kaboom!, Chopper Command, Stampede, and Keystone Kapers.

Games that have a multiplayer mode will be playable by either taking turns on one PSP, playing games over the handheld's wireless capabilities, or competing in two-player matches over two PSPs with just one UMD disc using the game-sharing feature.

It's unclear how or if the games will be "Remixed," but Activision does say the collection will sport "modernized front-end graphics." Gamers can also look forward to a 1980s-themed soundtrack, classic game manuals, and several unlockables.

I've bought every Activision Anthology ever. The PS2 was awesome! The GBA had more games, but lame music. The PC version is the best of all! It has tons of games as well as 80s music, although the tracks stink compared to the PS2 version. I bet this new one will be the best ever! I LOVE Activision Anthology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I play it at least once a month! Keystone Kapers is my favorite game ever!!!!!!!!!1

Well, the Atari collection for DS was good, playing Tempest was almost true to the original with the stylus control. The PSP won't offer anything like that, just basic controls and the same graphics (which was something else the DS offered, remixed graphics) so that's why you don't hear complaining about collections on the DS.

This sounds like a port of the Activision Anthology game that was done for the PS2.

What would really float my boat is, is having a complete set of Atari 2600 games on one UMD. I'm tired of seeing these small "sample packs". Heck, they're extremely small files for pit's sake.

it won't sell well, but it's a good idea.

however, i wish there was more original content coming to the PSP. even as much as i love VP: Lenneth, it's being smothered in re-releases and re-hashes.

These compilation packs are a frustratingly restrictive way to release the old 8-bit classics.

There were thousands of 8-bit games produced, with several versions of each for different platforms. Most of us who were avid gamers in the 80's will only have strong memories for a handful of these games on one or two platforms. So the chances of seeing more than one familiar game on any given compilation disk are very slim indeed!

A much better approach would be to allow people to pick and choose their own compilations and download them.

They should just bring out a umd with 1.50 firmare on it.. and charge like £40 for it LOL. Im just kidding..

One thing I hate about these collections is that they arent as quickly accessible on the psp platform. I have capcom classics, and it takes like 5 mins to actually get into playing the game (from turning the psp on). PLUS, you probably have these in the attic maybe, and to pay like £30 is crazy.

One thing i wish the psp had, is like what the wii is going to have. Now THAT would be awesome. Instead of buying umd compilations, just download them via wifi or something. Or heck, go into the store, buy it and download it right there.

I would definately be excited about that news, just not so much this.. especially if you have a 1.50 firmware LOL

I like the Classic Collections that Capcom has been putting out but this stuff is a little too oldschool even for me.

I was going to buy a PSP, but I'm seriously rethinking my plan. All I see are ports and UMD going the way of the dodo

-steriotype, they are making lots of new games, that are going to be sweet in the next two-three months alone.

Stagnation of creativity sucks. Why the heck are these games ported over and over ad nauseum. I am so sick of seeing the same titles being regurgitated like Friday's bottle of whiskey on Saturday morning. Give us new stuff, and if your creative dept.'s can't come up with anything, then hire me!

-you must not be payying much attention around the boards.

sorry to burst the old bubble, good man Activision, but I will just simply EMULATE it all, thanks for the offer. Unless they show that it has benifets that emulating would not have. like the Sega Collection allows you to be able to play two-player online!
