TGS '07: Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Hands-On

The next game in Konami's world-conquering football series is nearly here. We checked in at Tokyo for a play on the latest build.

TOKYO--About this time every year, football fans begin to eagerly anticipate the latest release in their favourite gaming franchise. For many people, that game is Pro Evolution Soccer, and there's no doubt that Konami's series has its fair share of hardcore fans around the world. We first encountered the game at last month's Leipzig Games Convention, but as the game is being developed in Japan, its spiritual home is really the Tokyo Game Show. Naturally, it was one of the first demo areas we headed to when the show opened, and we have plenty to update you on.

Before playing the game itself, we took in all that the video demo had to offer while waiting in the queue. The good news is that the game is looking better and better by the month, with a particularly good facial animation system that makes players look unmistakably lifelike. The second piece of great news is that official kits for Newcastle, Valencia, and FC Barcelona seem to be in place, complete with the correct manufacturer logos and sponsorship details. And also on the clothing front, the kits themselves have much better deformation effects than they ever have before.

Moving on from the trailer and onto the game itself, Konami had gone to great lengths to present the game on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as elegantly as possible. Individual sofas were set up in front of large flat-screen TVs, while amps pumped out 5.1 surround sound to high-end speakers. The demo that we played on Xbox 360 offered different, if not more, teams than the Leipzig demo, including Brazil, Portugal, Greece, Spain, France, and Turkey. Noticing that Brazil weren't rated as well as even Greece in terms of defense and teamwork, we opted to play a match as Spain against underdogs Turkey.

The demo itself may have been limited in terms of teams and game modes, but we noticed plenty of new tweaks that had been added in the month since we last played. During the match intro and halftime, the camera now zooms into the crowd to show off the fans, and you can see them chanting and waving banners as they look on. There are also some really nice new animations, meaning that players have a much more convincing weight when you look closely. For example, they now stumble in a much more convincing manner after jumping for a header, and when they're running at full steam you can really see them thrusting their chest forward. Of course, all of this is easier to notice when playing the game in high definition, but there are some noticeably improved touches in the way that players move.

Of course, small nips and tucks are all well and good, but what fans will really be looking forward to is how the new artificial intelligence system will respond to their playing style. We have to say, we found that Turkey provided quite a challenge in our friendly match, to the point where we really never had a good chance on goal. The defenders in particular are very clever about backpedaling and timing tackles. They're much less likely to be intimidated if you run at them, while pulling off a token dummy or feint also failed to get results. In the end, we rather embarrassingly lost 1-0, and to rub salt into the wound it was the result of an own goal.

Pro Evoluton Soccer 2008 is clearly starting to come together, and even though it's more difficult it's still as rewarding as ever. We were also genuinely surprised at how good it's looking graphically, although it's worth noting that the replays still featured a good degree of slowdown, while the pitch itself was lacking detail. We can't wait to play more of the game, especially as all our experiences so far have been with foreign-language versions. Rest assured, we'll be hounding Konami for more on your behalf as soon as we return home.

not seeing anything special here just a bunch easy through ball breakaways. it seems like most of the people that like this game will play fifa but don't even give it much of a chance going into it. and the reason why pes might make tevez look more realistic if thats even true is because when you only have 5 licensed teams its not too hard to make them look good

"both games look great. But i think ill have to get fifa, it has a huge amount of modes you can play and the gameplay looks better than ever"

well i got FIFA thinking that EA had finally sorted their act out but i was very dissapointed. you can only play a friendly in the be a pro mode and there is no proper season mode, just a load of tournaments. the customisation is also terrible and there aren't even any weather effects (so all games are played on a sunny day or at night and thats all there is). i played the pro evo demo and it's pretty good, if it has a decent season mode and lots of customisation then i will trade in FIFA for pro evo

I bought fifa 08 and at the begining i was so amazed. The new pro mode and all the teams licenses they have. But than after playing a bit the games it started to get boring. Everything kept on reapeting it self the way you score was always the same and the build up also. so i hope pro evo is ging to be better... beacuse im going to get it

i've been a pro evo fan since pes 3 but i was so annoyed at pes6 and it's woeful a.i i'm thinking of fifa08 after playing the demo which i thought was pretty cool, i guess i'll have to make my decision on october 26th, oh and anglo patriot, you don't need caps to type a page of bs, it just accentuates your stupidity...".GO PLAY YOUR ARCADE CRAP WHILE THE REST OF US WITH BRAINS PLAY A REAL SIMULATION OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME" haha what a tit

    LOL @ Anglo_Patriot
It is widely known that Pro Evo is a MUCH more accurate simulation of football in terms of th actual game mechanics than Fifa is. Case in point, on Fifa when you score the net doesnt even billow as it would in real life - you here a clink as if the net was made of metal, and then it just bounces down with no element of physicality as the net appears to be totally solid, not a floppy net as is the case in real football.
Fifa may have its fancy licensing, and if that is all you care about then go and play Fifa. Pro Evo however is a FAR more realistic simulation of football, with SUPREMELY better ball physics, and the fact that it is much harder to actually score ridiculous goals from 40 yards out like you can with regularity on Fifa.
Hell even in their promo video they show Ronaldinho scoring some ridiculous shot from miles out - you could do it on Pro Evo, but you would have to move the player in the right way, set him properly for the shot, ensure the ball is not sitting at his feet, and make sure that the player you have is highly competant at taking long distance shots.

Fifa is the more arcadey game here, Pro Evo is the ultimate football sim - as evidenced by the fact that most pro footballers who play games play PRO EVO not FIFA.
The chelsea team often have pro evo tournaments at each other's houses for example.
Anglo patriot is clearly just some immature 12 year old who only cares about being able to play with licensed teams.
There is such a thing as downloading an option file you know.... With all the correct names and kits etc - then you can have no argument for saying that fifa is better than Pro Evo, because it isn't....

HaHa Penguno u are an idiot haha fifa 08 sucks have you played both the fifa and pro evo demo coz i have and there is no comparison i mean people go on about fifas better graphics but has any1 else noticed every player in fifa has a huge jaw and looks really heavy built and they dont even have tevez's player likeness which pro evo does infact all the players look much better in pro than fifa and fifas gameplay doesnt even compare pros is greatly improved from last year aswell so shut up you idiot

both games look great. But i think ill have to get fifa, it has a huge amount of modes you can play and the gameplay looks better than ever. Fifa has finally listned to all the comments form ppl and they longer think about the presentation and graphics.
Por evo 07 isnt much diffrent than 06 they only chnaged some basic stuff, they didnt really go into more depth like fifa has this year.
So overall i think fifa is going to be better this year.
