MLB 2K7 gets indie rocked

Wolfmother, Tapes 'n Tapes, The Pixies, Nirvana, The Walkmen lead list of indie all-stars for soundtrack; game goes gold, will be in stores February 27.

2K Sports has no problem avoiding the mainstream when it comes to putting together soundtracks for its games. For NBA 2K7, the company tapped producer extraordinaire Dan the Automator to put together a collection of underground hip-hop. For MLB 2K6, the publisher teamed up with indie stalwart Matador Records for its catalog of artists, which includes indie darlings Yo La Tengo, Pavement, and Pretty Girls Make Graves.

This season, 2K Sports is sticking with the indie music theme with selections from vets and new acts. The soundtrack, announced today, will include game soundtrack staples Wolfmother, buzz band Tapes 'n Tapes (who will also head up the 2K Sports Hit-n-Run tour), up-and-comers The M's, and established acts such as Nirvana, The Pixies, and The Stooges. The full soundtrack is listed below.

2K Sports also revealed that much like the glove of Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez, MLB 2K7 is golden. The game will be available on February 27 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. DS and Game Boy Advance versions will be released later this spring. I remember when I was a lame indie nerd and decided that music should be bad once it came to a venue other than in my **** room while i was masturbating to how great only me and my douchy friend "thought" were the only people listening to it. I love these times when people still can't comprehend how easy it is for music to spread and be loved by more than just a bunch of douches who would love to work for Pitchfork. It is lame as well to say that something is appealing merely for the fact that the word has not spread about it. Thank god theyre herding the lot of you in Williamsburg. Actually I hate that theyre herding all these douches to my city. That reminds me, I need to go to Willy B and get drunk this week.

I'm a big fan of 311, I always felt the need for one of 311 songs to be brought into a soundtrack and i can honestly say that "Down" is the anthem of 311. And yes Sublime "Doin Time" is called "Summertime"????. Shame on you 2k sports.

I think this is a great list. I'm a big fan of most of these bands: Les Savy Fav, Thermals, and Tapes 'n Tapes, in particular. Nice.

I don't care about the music. If the gameplay is good, then I will like it. I have my own music.

well when your dead you dont own your music anymore its as simple as that!

i am fairly sure that alot of these bands dont actualy own their songs. many record contracts are written out so that the band can get exposure but the company owns mostly everything. even on very small labels, otherwise they would have to cash flow to maintain itself. usually the band at a later date will buy the rights back. i mean after all, michael jackson owns half the beatles songs!!

i would prefer a soundtrack that has original sound alikes or just straight hip hop, thats jock music and thats what they play at sport events anyways, a rock song on a stadium PA sticks out like a sore thumb and you know it.

but then theres the age old discussion of wether indie rock is more bout a sound, or about on what lable what band is on... i say its a little of each

I'm glad no hip-hop!!! THANK GOD!!! Now some good quality music for your ears folks...The Stooges, Pixies, Nerf Herder, and of course Nirvana, which is very contradictive cause these bands hate jocks, haha, especially Kurt Cobain, who eventually killed himself because of being famous. The bottomline is that 2K sports are trying to give some exposure to these up and coming bands like Tapes 'n Tapes and Wolfmother. But who needs Sublime in this soundtrack, geez louise, that's radio stuff........

Well the whole genre of Indie Rock has been pretty skewed nowadays it seems so you can't label the entire list that way if ya ask me. Except maybe The PIxies but they're in a whole influential class of their own (Nirvana's influential but not like The Pixies, sorry). As for "indie rock" bands playing on a sport game soundtrack, obviously they had no problems with it cause it isn't like 2k sports just swipes songs from ppl without asking. Everyone's lookin to make a lil cash for the music or at least to spread the word of it even if you have to suck in the fact that your selling out a lil bit, or at least thats what some believe when bands make this move. And Kurt Cobain hated alot of things but you can still hear him on mainstream radio anyways which seems wrong to me. But just take in the irony of the situation and let those strange ppl that have yet to hear such bands soak it in rather than consider it some sorta injustice. I mean The Stooges and 311 being on the same playlist bothers me a lil, but its just a videogame soundtrack. And not an EA sports Trax thing which to me makes a huge difference.

I absolutely agree with everything that kenesu96 said. I am still baffled as to why Nirvana is on this game. Kurt Cobain hated jocks. I guess thats what happens when you're dead. You have no control over what you stood for.

gee when i was young the whole indie rock scene (of wich i was heavily into) hate 2 things (among others)

they hated being put into something so commercial as a videogame, or any other media product , that is.

and they hated sports and jocks and anything related to it. its sad how times have changed.

and any classic soundtrack is incomplete without the replacements, dinosaur jr, or teenage fanclub

and oh god do i hate sublime!! their rise to popularity killed off commercial alternative radio in 96-97 along side crap like 311 and korn , and gave birth to alot of the stupid bands out now. im glad i keep the radio off.
