This Sunday, the New England Patriots will get the chance to become the first NFL team to finish the regular season and playoffs with a 19-0 record, matching the 17-0 season of the 1972 Miami Dolphins and then some. The only team standing in their way is the New York Giants, who will attempt to put a halt on the Pats' historic season by winning the franchise's first Super Bowl in 17 years.

Although football fans everywhere will likely be glued to the TV to watch the game unfold, Electronic Arts has already called a winner with the help of Madden NFL 08. The publisher ran a simulated Super Bowl using the game, and the Patriots continued their winning ways with a 38-30 victory over the Giants.

Though the virtual contest was fairly close the whole way through, the real story of the game is perhaps best told by its simulated players. All-everything quarterback Tom Brady was the Patriots' top performer, completing 29 of 40 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns. On the Giants' side of the field, the best player was field-goal kicker Lawrence Tynes, who made three of four field-goal attempts and was three-for-three on extra points.

As for how effective EA's annual Madden NFL Super Bowl sims are, the publisher touts a perfect record in predicting the last five years' championship games. For more gridiron gaming, check out the GameSpot-SportsGamer SuperBowl Showdown.

jwalley - umm Pats didnt do it. they went 18-1.1972 Dolphins went 17-0. Sure, Brady will go into the hall of fame someday, hes a good qb. He'll be on the list right under Eli Manning.

hmmm I wonder if the game accounts for Brady's ankle, or Randy Moss' abuse charges or the fact that neither team is playing at their home stadium.

Guess there's no reason to watch the Superbowl then since the Madden sims have been on point for the last 5 years.
