Shippin' Out Sept. 6-12: Beatles: Rock Band, Dirt 2

The Fab Four make their game debut alongside Codemasters' off-road racer, IL-2 Sturmovik, PS3 Trine, and Little Big Planet: GOTY edition.

After a dry summer, the game-release spigot is starting to open up. This week, arguably the most anticipated rhythm game ever hits store shelves in the form of The Beatles: Rock Band. Developed by Harmonix, published by MTV Games, and distributed by Electronic Arts, the title is the first to feature the likeness of the Fab Four and will sport 45 songs from the group's 10-year career. Rated T for Teen, it will be available for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 as a $60 stand-alone game, a $160 "special value edition" with standard Rock Band instruments, and a $250 limited edition with replicas of the Beatles' instruments.

If off-road racing is more appealing, then gear up for Dirt 2. Though no longer named after the late rally master Colin McRae, the racing game does feature a tasteful tribute to him in the form of a racing course he used in real life. It also features plenty of dirt-track action of the type that made the Scotsman famous and will be available for the PC, PS3, PSP, DS, and Wii.

Also new this week is Eidos Interactive Mini Ninjas, which features, as advertised, teeny shinobi. However, instead of the bloody combat popularized by Sho Kosugi in such 1980s cult films as Enter the Ninja, the E10+ for Everyone 10 and above rated game will feature nonlethal, kid-safe combat. Also in the mix will be stealth and magic, with defeated enemies turning into adorable animals instead of festering corpses.

Rounding out this week's releases is the World War II flight-combat sim IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey for the PS3 and Xbox 360, Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days for the PSP, and the Game of the Year edition of Little Big Planet, a PS3 exclusive.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

    NOT ANOTHER MUSIC GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, what the fudgebumps? How many music/rhythm games do they have to release before people realize that it's not new anymore?

Adding the Beatles to a stale music game doesn't make it fresh again, it just gives it a new name. Who gives a blink?

I for one am bored of playing this type of game and am tired of shelling out cash for music that can only be heard on my console. Come out with a game that allows us to import our own tracks then I'll be interested again.

I don't really want these games right now, at least. I'm saving my only $40 for LittleBigPlanet for PSP!

While I'd love to get the new Bealtes game, I don't like them that much to pay full price for the game. Definitely getting it eventually though.

How did the Beatles game get a T rating? Suggestive custom rocker outfits?

    @ Sins-of-Mosin

I hope that you are right. I love good games, and the more the better. However Borderlands is not out yet and while it is quite huge (sounding) it might not have enough polish to make it great. As of this day Batman is likely game of the year.

i will wait for DAO and ME2 thanks. Also waiting for SW:ToR, and GW2. I can't justify getting beatles RB due to the fact that I would spend way too much money buying DLC for it. Will have to settle for playing their music on a real instrument.

Raiden IV could be interesting, though I'd feel a lot more comfortable paying $5 for it than $10; if it's $15 or more I'm gonna be like "eff that!!"

Back on topic: that's a good number of games coming this week... should hold most of us over until MW2. Mini Ninjas shipped last week (friend of mine got it) though, so did IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey.

@R7 3... I don't think he's really comparing them. He's just complaining about the fact that this will be the 4 band-centric game to come out... well I guess GH: Van Halen isn't out yet is it. But they're basically about to run out of bands worthy enough for a RB or GH game. Of course, Prince can play the guitar a lot better than the bands we have today... so I guess it would be cool to have him in a RB or GH game but not one of his own.

@taylormadederek - I'm currently playing Batman and enjoying it but I don't see how it will compare to the sheer scope of Borderlands.
