Square Enix wheels RPG smorgasbord to E3

Japanese publisher's announced exhibition lineup includes Last Remnant, Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery, but no current-gen Final Fantasy XIII.

In early June, Square Enix held an event in Tokyo, and sticking to what it knows, dished details on a number of its epic role-playing games that are headed to Microsoft's console. The Xbox 360 games augment the publisher's extensive lineup of RPGs for other platforms, including the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and DS, PlayStation Portable, and even iPod. With the E3 Media & Business Summit rolling into the Los Angeles Convention Center next week, the publisher announced today exactly which of its wares gamers can expect to see at the show.

For Sony and Microsoft's high-powered consoles, Square Enix will be showing off The Last Remnant. A timed exclusive for the Xbox 360, The Last Remnant is slated to appear this winter, with the PS3 edition following on an unannounced date sometime thereafter. The Xbox 360-exclusive Infinite Undiscovery and the Tri-Ace-developed Star Ocean: The Last Hope will also be on show next week. Final Fantasy fans hoping for an update on the next installment in the popular franchise for the PS3 might be out of luck, given that the publisher made no mention of FFXIII or FF Versus XIII in today's announcement.

Following on from announcements that Square Enix would be remastering a number of its classic games for the Nintendo DS, the publisher said that Final Fantasy IV, Dragon Quest IV, and Chrono Trigger would all be on display. For the PSP, Square Enix will be showing Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution, which are revamped versions of the first two games in the series. The publisher will also be showing off its new iPod effort, Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes.

Square Enix's show space will also feature two portable games from its subsidiary Taito Corporation. Released initially for the PSP and then followed by an Xbox 360 edition, Exit is now making its way to the Nintendo DS. Taito will also be showing off Legend of Kage 2, a DS follow-up to the developer's arcade action original.

Chrono Trigger coming for the DS will rock, hopefully, this will encourage Nintendo into releasing the Earthbound series for the handheld or at least Virtual Console. Though we'll have to wait until Nov. 25 for it, at least gives me some time to play DQ IV and Sonic Chronicles for the DS.

Seeing Chrono Trigger return is a great thing, but I wish Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) can return and be refurbished to the original design. The real big title that needs a world-wide re-release although is Seiken Densetsu 3 from the SNES.

Square Enix producing for the 360 is the best news I've got in ages now let's hope they'll handle it right, which I don't really doubt they will.

I hate Microsucks dirty deeds. I hope it sucks ass on the 360. Sad thing is it going to suck for the ps3 as it will have to down grade for the 360. Screw SE and M$

Yea, it kinda does suck that SE forget their loyalties so easily, but as Gemini said, it's just business. And as much blood as people may want for their 'treachery', I have to add that I was thrilled to find out FFXIII is coming out on the 360 due to the fact that I'm a 360 owner and once a loyal follower of the S-E RPG series such as Final Fantasy... So I'm just going to shut up and give my support to them there and not scrutinize them for their choice of console.

I can understand people being a bit upset with Square's move to the XBox 360, but I would ask them to remember that many many moons ago they once had a deal with Nintendo. After things didn't work out, to put it lightly, they then moved to Playstation. Square has always looked for the best place to get their games out, and right now that best place is Microsoft. The have the most games right now and far more people own a 360 over a PS3. It is just good business.

Square Enix seems to like Microsoft a lot. But Idk, many 360 owners aren't RPG gamers

kingdom hearts 3 will have to be a ps3 exclusive. they cant shaft the ps3 this hard and not have anything to make up for it lol. and i dont even own a ps3. they are making those handheld kh games but those have no mention either. kh universe may have a huge place in the upcoming days at e3.
