Square Enix lays out 360 RPG slate

[UPDATE] Infinite Undiscovery due in September, The Last Remnant to follow; Star Ocean: The Last Hope due in '09 on Microsoft's console.

It looks as if 2008 is set to be the year of the role-playing game. Earlier this year Mistwalker's Lost Odyssey was released on the Xbox 360, and Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors was recently released on the Wii. Portables also picked up some action, with titles including The World Ends With You and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings coming to the Nintendo DS.

As far as the rest of the year goes, it's looking pretty good too. Two long-awaited epics are on the way--Peter Molyneux's Fable 2 and Denis Dyack's Too Human. On top of that, Baroque is coming in July for the Wii and PlayStation 2, and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP) due for release in Europe, with both already out stateside.

And if all those games weren't enough, Square Enix has added another two RPGs to the roster this year, with a third to follow in 2009.

The first will be Tri-Ace's Infinite Undiscovery for the Xbox 360, the first in a new series about a young lad fighting against the evil Dreadknight. The game is set for worldwide release in September. North Americans will be getting the game first on September 2, Europeans next on September 5, and the Japanese on September 11.

Infinite Undiscovery will be followed by The Last Remnant, another RPG powered by the Unreal Engine 3 (the first was Lost Odyssey). The game has been given a confirmed global release window of this winter for the Xbox 360, although a time frame for the PlayStation 3 version wasn't given. The plot focuses on battles to control powerful ancient relics called remnants.

Finally, a new chapter in the Star Ocean series was also unveiled. Previously announced merely for next-generation platforms, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is set for release in 2009 exclusively on the 360. The game marks the futuristic space opera RPG series' debut on a Microsoft platform. As for the past several years, the series has been only found on the PlayStation 2.

[UPDATE] But while The Last Hope is currently 360-only, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Yamagish told reporters in Tokyo that a PlayStation 3 version might be possible further down the line. "We can't really say anything yet," he said during a post-announcement press conference. "The answer to that is that, there's really nothing set at the moment. We can't say right now that it will or won't come out. It could go either way. The only thing that we can confirm right now is that it's coming out first on the Xbox 360."

The global release dates mark a departure for Square Enix, whose previous titles, including those in the Final Fantasy series, have typically been released several months later in the West. Square Enix president John Yamamoto has said that the company now plans to make upcoming releases global events.

Well Joebo, I'm mad because I bought a PS3 assuming that it would be THE console for JRPG's. Thats how its been in the past with PS1 and PS2 right? Also I really don't want to spend money on another console right now, seeing as I'm a poor college student, and to play online with the 360 you have to pay fees for XBOX Live, which I can't afford.

why do people keep complaining and keep getting so worked up over some of these exclusives? you don't owe any loyalty to any specific system, so if a ps3 owner keeps griping about the 360 getting certain games, maybe that means they should get a 360 because it has the games they want, and vice versa for that too. i mean if you play games to have fun and you want to play the games you like why not get that system? i'm not advocating either the ps3 or 360 because it can go either way for someone.

Well I'm quite upset that SE decided against using the full capacity of the PS3 and opted for the lesser or the two... but I guess now I'll have a reason to dust off my 360 and finally use the damn thing... 400 dollar paperweight... i guess I should be thanking SE for making the money i spent on the 360 worth it... MGS4 and many others have made the PS3 worth it to me so far... I guess there has to be something good on the 360... it just better not be another disappointment like many other 360 "blockbuster's"... oh well...

Last Remnant and Star Ocean look awesome. However, Infinite Undiscovery looks like total junk I must say. When is Final Fantasy XIII coming out??? That's all I'd like to know.

This is weird, many of these games were popular on the PS2 and are usually thought of as Playstation games, I wonder if the PS3's lack luster sales in North America and Europe have anything to do with it, or most likely Microsoft is able to pay Square-Enix more then Sony for these titles.

I don't see why people people are surprised that games are not being exclusiviely to Sony's systems anymore, have you cared to see how much these games cost to develop?!! Either way, it increases the company's profits and so forth with a WIDER audience. What DOESN"T make sense is games that were exclusive to Sony's systems before and then goes to exlcusive to a system with a smaller market for that kind of game (though that's 360's current downfall in, rpgs). That doesn't make sense business wise, let alone fanbase wise. Before some fanboy nut attacks me because of ignorance and fear of reading, I must remind you I'm all for good business and good news in the game industry--even if I own a 360.

Why is the PS3 losing all of its RPG's? Those are my favourite types of games and I don't really see anything out there relating to it for the PS3. Finally they bring something about (Star Ocean) that looks good and they make it exclusive to 360. I don't know what Sony did, but they seem to be losing companies in every area.

I dont get it at all, i geuss its normal that xbox finally got some good games. It never spoke to me before as im rpg player, not sports or fps. But now, look at the 3-4 great rpgs who came last year, lost oddysee, blue dragon, eternal sonata. Im afraid ill have to buy me an xbox 360 after all, those 3 rpgs, together with last remnant, the new tales and the new star ocean is worth it to buy it. Still wonder how good the 360 is tho...

I love the Star Ocean series but this is stupid. I'm a PS3 user, not a 360 guy. But this really doesn't make any sense. It isn't even that I don't like the 360 as much, but SE is making no sense at all. The series has stayed with playstation, there's even one coming out for the PSP. But if basically the whole series is on one platform, why change it? I would think that limits the scope of interested players. Unless its just meant to be a 360 exclusive, with another SO coming out on the PS3. If that's the case, I don't mind so much, but it still seems strange and rather moronic to make that change after all this time.

Well, Square Enix still has at least half a year before 2009 to think about the multiplatform...-ness of the next installment of Star Ocean. This game coming out on 360 is great but it would be a disappointment for the PS fans since the first ones were on Sony's consoles. Of course it wouldn't hurt to put them on both.
