PS3 Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo more than a demo?

We check in with Square to see whether we can expect to see anything more come out of the popular PlayStation 3 tech demo.

CHIBA CITY, Japan--One of the highlights of the trailer compilation shown in one of the main theaters on the show floor of the Square Enix Party 2005 is the PlayStation 3 technology demo of the opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII. Ever since the short clip's debut in May during Sony's E3 press conference, there has been talk that the footage shown is evidence that Square Enix intends to release a remake of the FFVII. The talk started up again with renewed interest, as the clip took centerstage during a compilation of trailers shown of upcoming Square Enix games. We took the opportunity to talk to a Square Enix rep for the internal division within the company, whose focus is on the properties relating to Final Fantasy VII, to get the scoop.

FFVII Tech Demo

Square's PS3 technical demo at E3

Square Enix's initial response to our inquiry about whether the tech demo is suggestive of a full game in the works fell in the realm of a carefully worded corporate response. The reps noted that, as was mentioned at E3, the demo was created to show just how powerful the PlayStation 3 technology is. As a result, it's a tech demo only and is not intended to indicate that a PS3 remake of FFVII is presently under active development by the company.

However, when pressed, the reps also noted that further plans for content based on FFVII haven't been set, per se. They affirmed that the resulting reaction from fans over the demo footage and the content related to FFVII shown at the party has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, provided fan reaction continues to be feverishly positive over the demo, and the very notion of a FFVII remake is certainly something Square Enix would bear in mind when planning future projects.

Does this mean it's on? Probably not at this exact moment, but at this point, we're willing to bet it's not a matter of if an FFVII remake will happen, but when.

So this game is out now if I'm not mistaken. I'll be pissed if I paid for and am downloading a demo, I was under the impression that it was the full working version.

Anyway I wanna say it's about bloody time. You could download a pirated version of the game to play on your psp a couple of years back, so I have no idea why it's taken sony so long to release it through PSN for psp and ps3. Oh well, it's here now so who cares?

WOW I remember posting a comment on here years ago about this and look nothing has happened, I still keep high hopes for the remake, I think a nice PS3 exclusive would be awesome with a special edition console to go along and then release it on the xbox 360 because i am not bias but i do think since this game is a sony exclusive in the first place it should stay that way. Also, who here thinks a prequel on Sephiroth would be cool, being able to play him as he became a legend in soldier and then being there for his downfall in Niebelheim. But seriously Square hurry up and finish your projects so you can start working on FFVII again. Oh yea and Crisis Core is an awesome game too.

They really need tothink about making a remake of FFVII! It is like the Holy Grail of the RPG's and so many people love it!! As long as they kept it as close to the original as possible (obviously with the much better graphics) and didn't include lots of stuff that wasn't in the first one i think it'd be a huuuugge hit, especially with all the original fans! Im still trying to gett my hands on the original version for the PS so's i can play it again! It still rates with any of the best of nows RPG's

Again I say they need this we fans needs this I own both PS3 and 360 so I'd buy it for both systems thats a fact Square Enix should really do this if they do they will prove they are the greates RPG makers of all time but only if they include Hironobu Sakaguchi of Mistwalker on this project because he is the father of all the FINAL FANTASYs' if it wasn't for him there would be no FINAL FANTASY. Hironobu Sakaguchi created Final Fantasy and should lead the project.

I think at the very least Square should rerelease the game as the original playstation version, as all PS3s can play them and upconvert them. But I'm still waiting for the PS3 remake, or at least hoping.

if i may shed some light on the topic of console wars here, to end it?
everyone is a fanboy/girl for their system, so stop arguing about that.
I, however, have the wonderful joy of hating them both, and therefore sticking with my ps2.
So here's how it is, from a totally neutral standpoint.
    FINAL FANTASY VII.
take that statement in. realize everything it means to so many people. understand what it was, and still is, to everyone that grew up with it [myself included].
Now, don't you think if this was released as a PS3 exclusive, it would have the highest rate of console sales due to a single game?
This IS FFVII we're talking about, and whether you worship it the way I or millions of others do or not, there is still that majority out there that loves it more than anything. I know I would buy any system this game was released on, just to play it. [assuming there's a remake/port]

    so forget system.
focus on the game, because with a game like FFVII, people WILL buy new systems if they have to.
    theend.

Recently this discussion has turned into the microsoft and sony loyalists whoever has one system will vote for that one regardless of they themselves bought it or received as a present. Now i am not saying i dont do this, because i own a 360 i will argue to the death about its superiority to any PS3 fan. but when it comes to FFVII a game that has influenced my life of gaming and i can say this for a fact that when i found my old copy without a memory card i played it through without saving and remembered the childlike joy i felt when i would come home and play the game. if i remember right i maxed out almost every character (except Yuffie and Cait Sith, especially the latter. any character whose limit break can end the game for you is not worth leveling) so i think that yes if Squeenix does decide to make it a PS3 exclusive, we are guaranteed a game that will break the realm of gaming as we know it, and if they want to make a shiny penny they will dull down the graphics and the gameplay (if they make it as action packed as advent children combined with the freeze action gameplay of crisis core we are looking at something truly amazing... tetsuya nomura please for the love of god dont let us down) to satisfy the masses, but we always say graphics dont play a part but i would say it gives a game a bigger flare when your not bugged by small mistakes in lack of solidarity or their graphics engine doesn't quite agree with fabric. you have seen it in dynasty warriors and we know that if a movie looks better in graphics the more likely you are to enjoy it. So i have addressed the console aversion problem as well as console unity. i just hope they actually come out with the game otherwise this has been pointless. anyone thought about that? ttfn

Now I'm just voicing my opinion, if you want to waste your time flaming at me go for it. If the do make a remake for FF7 I'm hoping that they will make it on the Xbox360 as well. They'd definitely get ALOT more sales being that I have friends, and I myself, that were loyal to Sony for a long time before they came out with PS3, and have now switched to Microsoft because they f*cked up royally on that console. And I'm ranting now...

One thing that does make this a probability is that SE is releasing FF13 on the 360, they just might do the same for FF7. Hell they'd make a lot more money, after that announcement the PS3 is working its way to scrap.

    @Brenton_2
I'm also a hge fan of FF7, I've played FF5 and 6 before it but never realized the fame FF had until FF7 came to me.
I do not agree wth your comment however, I believe FF7, if there is indeed a remake, should be made for more than just PS3. I would like to share the amazing experience with more than just PS3 owners. If FF7 was made for PSone in 1997, it should now be remade not for the sake of FF7 fans to squeeze out some more money off us(which I would still buy lol), but for those who didn't have the chance to feel FF7 experience.
Also, the console didn't bring FF7 to the masses,FF7 brought the console to the masses. Game brings the console to the masses, not the other way around.
