What does the Food Sanitizer actually do?

I got it earlier on, and it hasn't sanitized ANY of my food so far.

It doesn't actually remove the radiation from food, as you'd expect. Instead, it increases the health that you receive from eating it.

It takes up an annoyingly large chunk of your inventory space

Yes, the Sanitizer gives food extra healing power.
No, it does not remove radiation from food or turn dirty water into clean water.
