SCEA brings the Pain, Jeopardy

PlayStation Network weekly update introduces Amusement Park add-on for sadistic sandbox offering, gameshow adaptation, and demos for FIFA, GH: Aerosmith.

As Zen master/honky-tonk bouncer James Dalton insightfully noted in Road House, "Pain don't hurt." Sony might be taking cues from the best "cooler" in the business, given that it launched new Pain downloadable content on its customers as part of this week's PlayStation Network update.

Whereas Sony's original PlayStation 3 downloadable game Pain let players launch unfortunate people from a giant slingshot through a bustling (and breakable) downtown metropolis, the new $5.99 Amusement Park add-on offers a change of scenery, new game modes, and plenty more interactive objects to make the head-on collisions that much more entertaining. There are also three new downloadable characters to place in the slingshot, each one available for $0.99.

For those looking for less-agonizing downloadable games, Sony has also added the PS3 adaptation of Jeopardy to the PlayStation Store for $14.99. This version of the famous quiz game features multiple-choice answers and online multiplayer. PlayStation Portable owners also have a new downloadable option, given that the Sony Online Entertainment turn-based strategy game Field Commander has been added to the catalog. It also sells for $14.99.

Although this weekend's Rock Band 2 launch is limited to the Xbox 360, PS3 rhythm-game fans have an abundance of new options to keep them busy. On the Rock Band front, there are new songs from All That Remains for $0.99, as well as the free, downloadable Stephen Colbert track, "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)." Meanwhile, Guitar Hero players will get a rare Friday update to the store with a full album download for Metallica's Death Magnetic. The $17.99 collection includes 11 songs, and will be playable in both Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour.

Rounding out the week's additions is an assortment of videos and themes, as well as downloadable demos for FIFA 09 and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.

I don't see whats so great about these rhythm games. That's all it is Simon on a plastic guitar. Instead of beeps you get music. I love music and i play guitar a little and i have no interest in these games. I know they are hugely popular but i just don't get why. ----
Because your friends can get together, even with little to know musical talent, kick back a few and start rocking out the easy way. Via colors and rhythm to songs they know. Social gaming is taking off and learning curves are what people hate. Thats why the whole 2 buttons the Wii has makes it easy. Girls dont get confused with the whole finger to eye cordination

@kubiak Actually, yeah, CDs really are still $17... that is why I buy all my albums at Amazon MP3. No DRM, and a full album is usually only 8-10 bucks.

The GH:A demo is awesome! I need to buy PAIN:AP though... on the menu it's staring at me. Yelling "BUY ME NOW!!!!" I'm trying to resist, but I'll end up getting it sooner or later.

$17.99 is a bit ridiculous. Do cd's even cost that much anymore?

I'm surprised when it comes to PSN content that these are the things that GameSpot decides to talk about (I'm guessing they get a nice chunk of change everytime they evoke the words "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero" on their website). Why they even feel that PAIN of all other horrible games deserves some journalistic attention for additional content completely baffles me and I can only guess they got a check from SCEA for that too.

I feel that Siren: Blood Curse is one of the most ignored PSN games to grace the PS3, and despite my opinion that it's one of the best PS3 games to reach that console it gets absolutely no journalistic attention on GameSpot other than the one mention in the frequent "shipping out" headlines. At the very least it deserves some kind of mention like it not being available at retail in North America though it's getting a tangible retail version made available in Japan and Europe, but it doesn't even get that. I'm not angry that rated it 7/10 'cause I like it and that's all I need to know, but I can imagine their frustration was mostly over the 20-something step installation process that took... longer than any two longest MGS4 cutscenes, but besides all that the game was actually pretty tops for survival horror and is about the only survival horror on the PS3 besides Condemned 2.

Why can Guitar Hero defy the day the store/marketplace weekly update but no one else can. Is Activision shoveling money into unspecified Swiss bank accounts of certain people or what?
