GripShift gets remixed for PS3

Sony Online Entertainment to bring remixed, high-def version of PSP racing hybrid to the next-gen console for $9.99.

Last year, Sony Online Entertainment introduced an unusual hybrid racing game with puzzle and platforming elements to the PlayStation Portable. The game was largely lost in the rush of higher-profile racers on the system like Burnout Legends, Need For Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0, and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, but it will get another crack at drawing gamers' interest soon with its debut on the PlayStation 3.

Sony Online Entertainment today announced that a "remixed version" of GripShift would be available late this month or early next month for PS3 owners to download for $9.99. In addition to graphics that display at 60 frames per second and 720p resolution, GripShift will include online multiplayer for up to four players and new content. The publisher says it has improved the vehicle handling to be more responsive, and has included more than 125 new or remixed levels, as well as 25 tracks and a modified soundtrack.

Well that new information may give me the push I need to try it out. Like I said before, the price was certainly right. So until I get my PS3 set up, I guess I'll take a peek at the PSP version.

PS -- Good to know you guys are paying attention to the feedback from the reviews and (ugh) the forums. I know that can't always be good for the ego.

to theKSMM -> GripShift is certainly not a game for everybody, especially if they approach it like a racing game as Alex from Gamespot did. This is reflected in the set of reviews on Gamerankings.com which range from 40% right up to 98%, averaging at 73% - one mans meat is another mans poison it seems.

However, what we have tried to do in the development of the PS3 version is address many of the shortcomings raised by those who didn't like the PSP version. This includes improving handling and responsiveness, providing a broader selection of music, and improving the learning curve. Additionally, we have tried to add more value through things like better graphics, more levels, online play, and online leaderboards etc.

So, its not a game that will appeal to all, but hopefully the improvements and additions that have been made will make it a more attractive proposition for those sitting on the fence or who didn't quite like the PSP version.

At the very least, there is a free demo you can download, so people can try it out and very quickly find out whether or not its a game for them.

I ain't mad that Sidhe / Red Mile / SOE want to make some extra scratch of an already-developed game. I question whether a game made for a 4.3 inch PSP screen will look good on a 50 inch plasma TV, but there's nothing to say it's not a good fit for Sony's PS3 online service.

But the reason GripShift went unnoticed by me (and probably others) was because of the lackluster review it got from GameSpot. Even with it's low price when it was released, I didn't want to take the risk on a property I knew nothing about. I noticed that some other publications give it moderately higher ratings, but I was still a bit wary.

What would really set this game off is the ability for PSP players and PS3 players to compete in the same online matches. It seems technically feasible, but nobody is doing this type of thing, so I can only assume that there must be some technical limitations because the idea is boss.

    OMG SWEET!!!!

GripShift is one of my favorite PSP games!!

So many people overlooked this awesome title. It's so cool that Sony hasn't given up on it after the sub-par sales. This just means I'll have to pick up PS3 all the sooner.

Errm: "Actually I think we are getting shafted all around. It's like XBL has Doom for $10...pffft...it's open source and free for PC
    "

Sorry that's just not true. It may be true that the source code was released some ten years ago, but the original Doom is *not* free for the PC, or any other system.

These kind of games are simply not worth $10 on any platform.

I also think they would sell a great many more (and actually make more money) if they charged less for stuff like this.

Man, X360 gets Novadrome in XBL for $10 and all the people are saying things like: "GREAT, I WILL GET IT, XBL IS THE BEST, THIS GAME IS AWESOME" and things like that (And i have to say, all of that are true, really)

The PS3 gets GripShift Remixed in PS-Store for $10 too and all the people are saying things like: "BAHHH PS3 SUCKS, ANOTHER PORT, THE GAME SUCKS HARD, I WILL NOT PLAY IT EVEN IF THEY PAY ME $10" and that.

Come on people, is a $10 game arcade game.

The original PSP version of the game not is bad at all. the Driving mechanics are kinda awful, but the game only needs little changes for being a cool game. (and the sixaxis could help to improve the handling, just think about it)

The track editor is great, the graphics in the PSP are cool (big-ass tracks) and it will only cost $10.

NOTE: Nintendo sells lame games for $5 and $10 in the VC and all the people says its great... even if they already play that games in emulators.
