Gran Turismo 5 Impressions

Gran Turismo 5 is firmly back on the radar, thanks to a brand new trailer shown at Sony's E3 2009 press conference.

It's been a while since we heard anything about Gran Turismo 5, especially since we had the Prologue edition to tide us over last year. However, Sony marked E3 2009 with a spectacular new trailer for the game, and while it revealed little about the game or the release date, we gleaned plenty of hints about what to expect.

The trailer opened with an homage to cars, with Ferraris in the city and racing cars out on the track looking as good as ever. It was a flashily edited showing, particularly when the Balloon Angels planes screamed overhead. That said, it was difficult to ascertain whether the footage was in-game or prerendered, but that's a testament to the visual fidelity we've come to expect from the series.

The biggest news from the video is that both the WRC and NASCAR licenses will be included, which should please a lot of racing fans who are used to seeing them featured in their own separate games. The rally driving looked as impressive as ever, particularly the dirt-racing segment we saw, and we even saw a bit of damage to the front of one of the rally cars. Perhaps it was a sign that fans will finally get deformable vehicles in the series?

With Microsoft unveiling Forza Motorsport 3 yesterday and now Sony doing the same for Gran Turismo 5, it's clear that hardcore racing games are back on the agenda. No release date was announced today, but we'll be all over the Sony booth today to find out more.

    do u read SCEA below the "Gran turismo 5"? that means sony actually owns this game just like kz, uncharted, GOW, and etc..u know what i mean rite? so it can't come out in xbox360, unless m$ buys whole sony company..

    But,GT5 NEEDS a better gameplay.
    I don't want to pilot stones,like in GT4.

    That's the worst part of the great japanese games,wait for a ultra rare new about it,and wait a century to get your hands on it.Only to increase the hype.
    Nowadays,my eyes are on DiRT 2,a great promise.

    bcoz they announced they wer making gran turismo 5 aaages ago the game has built up so much hype i just hope it lives up to it and is a truly great game

    I just can't believe that prologue will be done graphically. I was like, are you effing kidding my man sack? GT5 Prologue is the most graphically intense driving game on the market. Not to mention that when it is paired with a wheel it becomes the most realistic driving simulation title to date. The knowledge of another Gran Turismo title being released was the nail that drove me to purchase a PS3. Let's hope it hit by spring of 2010.

    So basically if i understand this, we still dont know when this is coming out. Gran Turismo is a lot like heaven/paradise, it sounds very appealing and its been promised for a while, but in the end if it exist/ever happens is a matter of faith.

    I am a Forza and Gran Turismo fan. I have owned every simulation game for both consoles since Gran Turismo came out for PS1. I wish Gran Turismo would come to Xbox 360 because i'm going to have to buy a PS3 when it comes out! I didn't buy a Ps3 when prologue came out because I was too busy with Forza 2 to give.

    NASCAR and WRC in GT5 is great news. Hopefully it gets released before 2011.

    I can't wait for this game, it's going to be huge. I mean, you can buy a PS3 and only GT5 and will have fun for something like a whole year if you are a racing fan

    This looks like its going to be one of the most inclusive racing games ever made. I just hope its released before all the cars in it are out dated.

    After looking at the pics on IGN, i am soooo buying this and Wipeout HD Fury will keep my attention once more.

    Personally, one of the most anticipated games for me.

    The graphics look breath taking, can't wait to get my hands on it!
