SIREN: Blood Curse Hands-On

Japanese zombies need shooting too, and we oblige in our look at this horror action game from Sony.

The video game world has seen its share of horror games over the years, from straight-ahead zombie games like Resident Evil to the more mystical fare of the Silent Hill series. With the upcoming SIREN: Blood Curse, a sequel of sorts to the original PlayStation 2 game from 2004, you can add one more series to that list of creepy games. We had a chance to check out a brief demo of the game at today's Sony press event in Los Angeles, and even in broad daylight, it managed to give us the creeps.

Set in a mysterious Japanese village that, rumor has it, disappeared 30 years ago, Blood Curse follows the crew of an American television program sent to the country to investigate the strange reappearance of the village. During the playable demo, we took control of a character who stumbles upon two Japanese zombies, known in the game as shibito, as one viciously attacks the others with a blade. Seconds later, the mauled zombie returns to life and shambles off into the darkness, leaving the main character shocked and grasping for a hold on reality.

As you take control of the character, your first goal is to sneak past the shibito ahead of you. The game makes light use of stealth techniques: To crouch (and thus make less noise as you move), you simply press the circle button. Granted, the stealthy approach isn't always the best one, as sometimes you'll need to bust a few zombies in the head with whatever weapon you can find, be it a pipe, a scythe, or a gun.

During the demo, our hero was accompanied by a female companion. Though you don't have direct control over her, she came to our rescue at one point, when we were overrun by a flesh-craving zombie. In fact, SIREN will have seven main characters, each of whom you will control over the game's 12 episodes, each of which will be released on the PlayStation Network as a separate download. After our brief playable demo ended, we were treated to a brief cutscene that introduced a little girl into the cast of characters, though it was unclear what role she plays in the overall plot.

SIREN's most intriguing feature--the ability to share the sight of enemies and allies alike--was unfortunately not playable in this build. With this feature, you'll be able to take over the sight of another character or enemy temporarily, which sounds like it will be a good way to stay out of trouble when things get hairy, as they are bound to do.

With a gritty, grimy look, plenty of blood, and lighting effects that look like something out a claustrophobe's nightmares, SIREN looks to offer plenty of scares. The first release of this episodic game is due later this year.

Its not the best playing game. But the demo was interesting for sure. And its pretty dang freaky. Play threw twice, and the control feels better the second time around. But it something different. Hard to describe. Even odder than Silent Hill. Not super action. But has some action. Pretty cool. Will download the full game tomorrow after work. I would say if you like old school silent hill. You gotta try it.

This game looks great. I loved the original Siren and am a big fan of games like this in general (Fatal Frame is another good franchise).
    Can't wait.

yeah i played the demo. and its pretty good. I like the scary sounds and the dark setting. I can't wait til this game comes out so i can at least rent it. It may not be as good as RE5, but i think it will still be a decent game.

i have the demo and this game is gonna be GREAT i thought the demo was easy because all u have to do (when u get the gun) is let the sirens get in close n shoot 1nce and thats the end to them BUT what I DIDNT LIKE was IT WAS TOO DARK the ONLY thing u can see is were ur flash light is pointing (DUH thats the point) but in other games u can see around you like silent hill u need the flash light BUT u can still see with out it (xcept for some areas) but this game the entire demo U NEED IT and cant see with out it other then that i cant wait for this game its gonna be scary.... a ? for all gamers who like this style of game WHY do we like playing games that scare us? hahahaha i cant figure it out but i still play them. OH condamed 2 IS a freaky game if u havent played it GET IT.

I played the demo of this last night. Everything looked and sounded great. The scenery was very creepy and the lighting (or lack of it) really set the mood. I was psyched!!! But, and this is as big of a BUT as Rosie O'Donnel's, the controls were really clunky to say the least. I had a lot of trouble simply controlling the character's walk or run.

On top of frustrating controls, I'm now learning that this will be released as episodes. I REALLY don't like the idea of that AT ALL. It's bad enough that every time you accomplish the smallest goal it breaks away from the mood with a screen that sinply says you've completed the task or waht your next objective is.

I think it's safe to say that I will be staying away from this title. Unfortunately, it pains me to say it, cause the visuals and setting seems exceptional. Oh well...

The Trailer looks rather awesome although i am really skeptical. Nowadays everything looks awesome... so aswesome that graphics are no longer a measure for a good game. Anyway so far so good, but the fact that it is not released as a whole game is a source of concern. I wonder how much Sony is going charge for this?

If anyone cares or really wants to play this game, it's available on the Japanese PSN.

Which is accessed by creating a PSN account that says you're in Japan.

Then just find it in the PS store. Anyway, after playing the demo, it's actually pretty good. Not that I haven't played any other Siren games, but the look and feel of this one is terrifying. The horror in the characters' faces is genuine and almost eerily photo-realistic. That, combined with the grainy old school film look, makes for quite a thrill.

    I liked it.

Only bad thing was that it's all in Japanese, except for the dialogue, which is English and subbed in Japanese. So it took a while to figure out what to do, as essentially all text is Japanese.

Unfortunately, the fact that it's separated into downloadable content doesn't please me.

Won't get this unless something promising comes up, otherwise I'm sticking to RE5 and hopefully another FATAL FRAME game.

As a huge fan of the original Siren (hence the username) I don't have much faith in Blood Curse. First of all, I currently have a giant grudge with Sony for saying, "Hey, let's release Siren 2 in every country except for the US!" and then turning around and saying, "Hey, let's make a threequel for the PS3 and put it in the US and make no money on it because nobody owns a PS3 and milk money out of it by making you pay more money to finish the storyline!"

Is it me or does that sound idiotic?

I wanted to play Siren 2 on the PS2 for 50 bucks, but noooo, now I've got to shell out upwards of 300 for the PS3 alone and then 60 for Siren: Blood Curse (crappy subtitle, btw) and then MORE money for more episodes...

    That's just stupid!

Sony's after money, that's what it is.

And what's with the new combat ideas?

I mean, really, that much combat in a Siren game?

The lack of defense was what made it so good!

That chapter as Harumi where you had to sneak through the house of Shibito, often literally on their heels with no defense at all was an amazing moment in Survival Horror history.

Them downscaling the stealth element is blasphemy, I tell you!

This game is destined to fail and I feel very bad about it.

The original Siren PS2 was very terrifying. I remember playing this in the dark with the volume up very high-- it was one of the scariest and nail-biting experiences I have ever had. I'll never forget how my heart just dropped when I made the character come out from hiding in the closet while that 'family' was gathered around the TV. Watching the previews for the PS3 sequel, the obvious transition to next-gen is graphical representation, character models and fighting styles. I was hoping for a completely new experience instead of a town in the middle of nowhere-- like modern day Tokyo. Even then I don't think it would have the same ambiance if that were the case. But using a solid formula in a new location would keep the series fresh and constantly evolving the Siren project. Nevertheless, this is a classic game, one that should not be ignored even if it is down-loadable. What else are we to use our 60 gig's of space on? It's not like we can download South Park on it...yet.
