Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie

[UPDATE] Executive confirms his movie studio is working on the live-action adaptation of the seminal stealth action series; Sony also pondering EverQuest film.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.

"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."

For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. summit keynote address in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"

Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that stature was held by the Peter Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.

[UPDATE] On Friday, news of Sony's involvement surfaced in the Hollywood trades, which gave further details on the deal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, former New Line Cinema chief Michael De Luca is in talks to produce the project, with Kojima himself being named as executive producer.

Sony executives Sam Dickerman and Doug Belgrad are in charge of finalizing the deal to acquire the Metal Gear Solid film rights, which is apparently close to completion. Belgrad hailed the Metal Gear IP as "loaded with well-developed, intriguing characters and one of the first games to ever use cinematic tools in its storytelling."

I must say, I'm kinda worried as to how it will turn out but I have faith. I'm not sure of David Hayter would be good to play Solid Snake, while they do look similar, I don't feel he would quite live up to the roll. At the same time; I can't think of anyone else who would be good enough to play the roll. I just hope it isn't someone like Nicholas Cage or Tom Cruise. That would totally ruin it for me. Time will tell.

It's always a challenge to find stars for video-game films when the main character has a certain feel/look/sound to them, like David Hayter as Solid Snake, Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher, even Hitman 47 (not so much his voice, but his character). It's always a risk, but usually a risk worth taking.

I would want to hear David Hayter's voice as Snake, even if they dubbed it over some other actor lip-syncing the lines. David Hayter's voice defines Solid Snake even more than the character model itself. At least it does in the U.S. I don't know who voiced Snake in other countries' versions.

Hmm, well I think Hayter or Hugh Jackman would be ideal for the role of Snake...But I think I'm gonna have to say Kurt Russel would be perfect, since Solid Snake was modeled after him, so to speak. He's even got a good voice for the job. I just hope the filmmakers REALLY REALLY think it through before casting the actor for Solid Snake. He should also be an actor that everybody knows, since there have been a few really bad game-films. If the guy's just a nobody that people haven't heard of, it just doesnt seem right.

Dude, if Hideo approved it you know it's going to be awesome. He doesn't produce low quality. It's not in his genes. Maybe nanomachines though...

Hugh Jackman looks almost exactly like snake. during the Xmen movie, theres a scene where he made his voice sound like david hayter.

yea I don't know who could play Snake, but without David Hayter, it's pointless. Just like Splinter Cell, without Michael Ironside, its not right

That wasn't a mgs movie, that was a movie called Escape from New York (L.A. is the sequal) with Kurt Russel. Solid Snake was modelled on him.

I think Eric Bana has the best looks like Snake and a few make-up should make it better. About the voice, It is possible that David Hayter talks in stead of Eric, it shouldnt be that difficult besides without David Hayter there will be now Solid Snake..

The Metal Gear movie was already made in the 80's - it's called Escape From New York and it stars a guy called Snake Pliskin who wears an eye patch and smokes a cigar. I kid you not.

They should of let pixar do the film. It should be all 3d animated with know actors. I guess they want real big name actors so it well sell more and be financially productive.
