Rockstar gets L.A. Noire

Team Bondi's hard-boiled detective story gets picked up by a publisher unafraid of getting its hands dirty.

Los Angeles is apparently fertile ground for those paying tribute to film noir. Whether they strike it rich commercially and critically (Chinatown and L.A. Confidential) or not (Mulholland Falls and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), dark-edged detective yarns of all stripes seem right at home in the City of Angels.

Now the city is going to play host to a different kind of noir tribute--an interactive one--as Rockstar Games has announced that it will be publishing the debut title from Australian studio Team Bondi, L.A. Noire. While the game was originally revealed last year as a PlayStation 3 game to be published by Sony, today's announcement only refers to it as a "next-generation crime thriller," with no platforms specified.

L.A. Noire is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of the late 1940s, with players being given an "open-ended challenge" to solve a series of murders. The postwar setting will include the noir necessity of corruption with optional accoutrements drugs and jazz thrown in for good measure.

Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser will serve as executive producer of the game, with Team Bondi founder Brendan McNamara (writer and director of The Getaway on the PlayStation 2) serving as director of development. A teaser trailer has already been released, but Rockstar will release a full trailer of the game on its official Web site October 5.

    @Goez3000
    You are making up a load of crap! Can't you read?
    It says that this game was developed by Team Bondi and Rockstar will distribute it, Rockstar have had very little to do with it, but the fact that they like it means I'm going to buy it.
    This game has nothing to do with GTA 4, it's nothing like GTA 4!
    Go to the GTA 4 website and watch the trailers!

    dumb head.... it says the trailer will be released in October not the launch!!!

    as a rumor... that i've heard... and quote me that i said rumor but this game is suppose to be gta4.... the reason behind it is because the launch date is october....gta4 come out in october, and rockstare is going to be using the rage graphics engine to make the game (the first use of the rage engine was "table tennis" which by the way was only a test game to test out character models) but if u look at the characters used in the trailer you will see the use of the rage engine and the exact faces from table tennis.

    p.s.
    it's a rumor... but there are too many truths behind the rumors

    "Anyone that knows their Noir, knows that jazz music is not a characteristic of the genre. Very few Films Noir featured it. It is a misconception, and the biggest majority of them used brass heavy scores or none at all."

    Although it may not be a characteristic of the Noir genre, jazz, swing and big band were very popular in this time period. The main misconception here is that this is a Rockstar game. Rockstar have simply slapped their name on it and possibly tweaked the game slightly. and thank god they have, because there is no way in hell i'm forking out five hundred quid solely to own this game, or anything Rockstar release for that matter. P.S i also appreciate what they have done aesthetically. using a dull, faded look instead of going for the obvious black n white.

    IGN stated it was PS3 exclusive. But my guess is it will be ported to at least xbox 360. Still, this game could be another big hit from Rockstar.

    About time. A detective game. Not bland Sci-Fi, not another WWII game, but a detective game! Now all we need are cowboy games and romance games and ......Anyway, all we need are more subjects and we might actually end up with a mainstream market, rather than the neash it is now!

    Probably not a PS3 exclusive, since it was mentioned during Nintendo's visit at Rockstar games.
