Unreal Tournament 2007 to be PS3 launch title?

[UPDATE 2] Conflicting reports cast doubt on whether Epic Games' title will be one of the first shooters on Sony's next-gen console.

As part of its pre-E3 PlayStation 3 conference in May, Sony brought Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney on stage. Besides saying that Epic had already received a PS3 software-development kit--which he said was "easy to program"--Sweeney also performed a tech demo of a shooter running on PS3 hardware.

The game on display appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007, the flashy-looking, Unreal Engine 3-based successor to the popular PC shooter Unreal Tournament 2004. However, neither Sony nor Epic would confirm when--or even if--UT 2007 would arrive on the PS3.

Seven months later, the two companies have broken their silence. The January 2006 issue of PSM Magazine proudly proclaims that, yes, UT 2007 is coming to the PlayStation 3. UT 2007 for PS3 is the second Epic shooter announced for next-generation consoles. However, the first, Gears of War for the Xbox 360, is slated for a general "2006" release date, meaning it could conceivably come out after the PS3 UT 2007.

[UPDATE] The PSM article also dates Unreal Tournament 2007's debut on the next-generation console. On page 32 of the magazine, it calls the game an "online, adrenaline-fueled PS3 launch title, to be exact." Currently, the platform is tentatively slated for a spring 2006 launch.

However, over the holiday break, reports began to surface that UT 2007 might not be a PS3 launch title after all. The reports stemmed from a post on the forums of publisher Atari, who was the publisher of the Unreal franchise until Epic's deal with Midway Games.

The post was written by the forum member, "War_Tourist," who claims to be an "Epic Producer" and links to the official Epic Games web site on this profile. "We're not scheduled to be a ps3 launch title," wrote War_Tourist, "not certain where those news sites are getting that from." The poster went on to say the game will come to PC first, and Epic will release a pre-release PC demo.

[UPDATE 2] PSM reps contacted by GameSpot said that editors for the magazine were "told personally" by both Midway and Epic reps that UT 2007 would be ready on or around the launch of the PS3. However, Midway, Epic, Sony Computer Entertainment America, or War_Tourist had not given an official statement regarding UT 2007's PS3 release plans as of press time.

    see now im sure that with the billions of usb ports that the PS3's going to have they're probably going to allow the add on of a mouse if players like the PC version and cant stand the controller when playing UT.... unreal championship was good but not as good as UT2004 and stuff.... maybe this will change that.... who knows.....

    Revolution = PS3
    PS3 > XBOX360

    Did anyone actually read the Jan issue of PSM? Did the staff at Gamespot even read it?
    Did the PSM staf even proof their copy?

    In one article PSM claims that UT2007 is a launch title.

    Yet, in the article with the developer, at the very end they stated UT2007 for the PS3 still has a year left in the development cycle.

    IF UT2007 is a launch title, I guess the PS3 is launching for Holiday 2007.

    ...but PSM said it would launch in the spring, with UT 2007?

    Man this is gettin crazy. I like the 360 for the next gen consoles but I have to stick up for the playstation people. U pc fanboys are gettin out of hand. Man the keyboard and mouse thing vs controller is just ur opinion. Nothing more. If u can prove to me that a kb & m is better than controller then I'll leave gamespot forever. I mean as in scientific study or something along those lines. Thats just ur preference. Heck u probably suck with a controller. But thats cool though cuz I'm not that great with a kb & m. My accuracy and maneuvaribility improve with a dual analog pad though. Just please shut up about that stuff. Its gettin really old. I'm pretty sure you've seen the other twenty something pc lovers that said the same exact thing. UT 2007 will be on next gen consoles. Yes the 360 and PS3. Take a look at the dev interview if u dont believe me. And unless ur gonna run a SLI or Crossfire setup the console version will probably look better too. Now who wants to fork over all of that dough and still might not be able to enjoy the game at max settings? Not me. Anyway......I can't wait for this game. Flak Monkey fo life. Holla Back.

    The PC version will be better regardless if the PS3 supports mouse and keyboard. People need to realize by the time the PS3 drops PC graphics will already be ahead of it plus who wants to dish out 70$ for the PS3 version when it wont be as good as the PC version which will likely drop at 50$

    Unreal Tournament, is made to be played on PC with Keyboard and Mouse, playing it with a gamepad sucks. Even if it's compatible with keyboards it will be only good to be played online, because the bot skills are calibrate for gamepads users, and the sony's online service must be improved a lot to be good

    According to the producer of EPIC it won't be a PS3 launch title

    and for some reasons i trust him to be a better source then gamespot

    if it doesnt get released for the box 360, then epic must've gotten paid off by sony. The only reason it's launching for the ps3 is to attract the pc xbox demographic. The game would sell way better for the 360 and i seriously doubt that they chose to do this because of the ease of develping on a sony console. Sony just wants to show dev's that the 360 is not the only console that can ahndle the unreal 3 engine
