Quantum Impressions

We take a look at Tecmo's Gears of War-inspired third-person shooter.

Tecmo had a live demo going of Quantum, a third-person shooter, among the many, many playable displays of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. At first glance, it bears a strong resemblance to Epic's Gears of War series, but Tecmo's trying to do a few different things to help differentiate Quantum from its counterparts.

Who's Making This Game: Originally announced as Quantum Theory, Quantum is a being exclusively developed for the PlayStation 3 by Tecmo.

What the Game Looks Like: Imagine if Gears of War had an Eastern-influenced art style and you have a pretty good idea of what Quantum looks like. The environments that we've seen so far range from a gritty, barren style to colorful and vibrant, which in itself is interesting because most of the game takes place in a single, massive tower. But it's worth noting that this same tower is seemingly capable of transforming itself, which is something that comes into play during the course of the game.

How the Game Is Played:Quantum's main character, Syd, can perform most of the moves that you'd expect in a third-person shooter these days. You can make him take cover by pressing a button, and then pop up or take a quick step out and use any one of the three weapons that he has equipped at the time. He can also make use of blind fire or sprint to get close to an enemy and use a melee attack. So cover is a big deal in Quantum, but it can also cause some headaches because some cover objects can be destroyed by enemies or bosses, forcing you to run and look for another spot and fire safely from afar. The one massive boss that we saw in the demo had a charge-up projectile attack that can take out cover in a single blast.

Also, at some point in the game, Syd meets up with a female character named Filena who helps him out, and though she is controlled by the AI, you do have an opportunity to throw her through the air like some kind of human dart. Unfortunately, if she gets "killed" (an accurate description would probably be knocked out), you have to run over and revive her.

What We Say: It's difficult to overlook the similarities (in terms of gameplay) between Quantum and Gears of War, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we're hoping that the few glimpses that we had of the changing environment play a bigger role in the game and help make Quantum a little more distinctive.

    It says exclusively the PS3 yet gamespot has it listed for the 360. So will it be on the 360?

    I don't care if this a ripoff of Gears. Gears is a great game on the 360 and it's a shame that they never considered making a similar game if not the same game for the ps3. I hope more people attempt to do this. I hope this game copies everything but the glitches from gears.

    ElectrolightSH Gears of War was well received in Japan, I don't see why this won't be either... unless it sucks.

    techmo doing a shooter will be interesting. right now, im not really liking the soulcaliber look to it.... its kind of hard to make a fantasy shooter like that... but oh well, we'll see how it goes soon.

    I agree. Dead or Alive 5 should be on the PS3. Although, I sure hope this gets finished. With Team Ninja working on Metroid: Planet M next year though, I don't know if this will get finished for a release over here or not.

    Besides, from the pictures I just saw of the game, it actually looks like Tecmo's typical art work.
    Look at Ninja Gaiden, there are many similiarities, even the big guy (remember The ninja clan chief from Ninja Gaiden? He was also ripping with steroids).

    What Tecmo should be doing in my opinion is bring back Dead or Alive to playstation    .

    Even if this game is exactly like Gears of War, they can't devaluate the game, becouse on the PS3, there is no Gears of War.

    @ElectrolightSH,

    Easy there bud, nobody ever said that tecmo actually got inspired by Gears of War, it could simply be a coincidence in terms of themes and settings.
    And if they DID get inspired, maybe they felt that Gears of War was a great game but without that Anime feel to it. You see maybe if Americans started thinking about them a little more, more Japanese would be into American games. (Oops, sorry did I just quote your line there?)     :p

    The japanese are well known for stealing ideas, tinkering with them, and bringing something out 99% similiar and dropping their own name on it. So yes, this is a Gears Clone, call it for what it is. Sony fanboys are the worst, must suck knowning that Sony produces 80% more games than what you can get in the US and they're only for the Japanese. At least the MS owners know that somewhere across the world other region 360 owners aren't getting 80% more games than they are.

    @ ElectrolightSH: It's the narrow minded people who don't play japanese games. I love games like parappa the rappa and dragon quest. Lets not forget that little series of japanese games called final fantasy. Oh and Nintendo's entire catalogue. The japanese games industry has put the 360 at the front of pretty much everything. The last remenant blue dragon, lost odyssey and star ocean! all of which aren't on the ps3. Did we moan then no! Lets not forget the delay caused on tekken 6 because for the first time ever it is going on another home console. I look enviously on people who have played gears of war 2 as I managed to finish 1 before my 3rd console died on me. I would have played gow 2 if microsofts hardware was more reliable. I can only thank tecmo for this as this game may fill a little gap in our catalogue. Don't look at this so one sided. I would love for this game to come out on 360 anything to stop the zealousness of people.

    So the Japanese are making a Gears of War inspired shooter which looks pretty cool but despite being inspired by an American game that was exclusively for the Xbox 360 and a system more popular in America they are making this exclusively for the PS3 a system more popular in Japan? THIS WHY I F*&$#ING HATE THE JAPANESE GAME INDUSTRY. Maybe if they started thinking about us a little more, more people would be into jap games.

    so you're telling me that only ps3 users do that? what is with all of this fanboyish c**p that is still being thrown around? sony, ms, or nintendo may publish a game but it doesn't mean that the companies themselves are copying each other. why do you take a look at who the developer is? temco, not sony. some game developers are obviously inspired by games made by other developers, it's not a new thing. stop trying to make this into a flame war.

    this game proves that gears is good. not a reason to get ps3 at all their seems nothing 2 unique about this.
