Mortal Kombat II Update

We clock in some time with an updated version of Midway's retro title for the PlayStation 3 and find out how much the trip down memory lane will cost us.

LAS VEGAS--Although we just caught our first look at Midway's upcoming retro titles at CES earlier this month, we had to check them out again at Midway's press event. As we noted before, the games are being developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Sony Online Entertainment. While DE is hard at work on the games, reps from SOE were on hand with updated versions and a bit of news on pricing. All the titles were at the event, but we zeroed in on the one that we're most looking forward to: Mortal Kombat II.

The updated game still wasn't online, though we were told an online-enabled version is just about ready to go into testing. The biggest update to the game was its button layout, which is now set up in the traditional configuration rather than the awkward one that tripped us up in the last version of the game. Beyond that, the graphics and gameplay were on point, making this one of the best conversions of MKII we've seen in a long while. Though the release timing wasn't available for any of the games, SOE reps did confirm pricing: The retro titles will run for $4.99 each when they hit the PlayStation Store in the next few months.

    this game, Mortal Kombat 2 , MK 2 is way better than Mortal Kombat 3 to me

    I like Mortal Kombat way lot more than MK 3,

    I also play Killer Instinct and Street Fighter.....

    I'm really really good at this game. There's some people in my area and they say they're hella good and then I went over to their house and I beat them all so badly....

    I like to play Killer Instinct, MK 2, Street Fighter Anniversary, Street Fighter Anthology!!

    Those people I've been so badly, they say that i can own the whole town with MK2.

    not the best MK from the oldies but i will pay 5 dollars willingly for the game. i ain't expecting any good online from sony. UMK3 is way better though. graphics, characters everything. Sure Mk3 didn't have some fav characters but they were brought back in umk3 which is on 360. This game is still better im terms of pricing. I wonder if they will release a next gen MK game.

    Finally, some good news for Sony! I'll gladly pay $5 bucks for THE best 2D MK ever made. I think Boon and Tobias caught the "Matrix Bug" in that they got too much attention, which heightend expectations, and threw too much money into the projects resuting in horrible sequels (except, of course for MKII).

    I like the fact that with MKII they still had that 'working-from-a-garage' m using the same actors for different characters (like the guy who played Kano was also Baraka and the guy who portrayed Johnny Cage was also SubZero, Scorpion, and Smoke). And yet they managed to get a guy with an M.D. (that's a doctor for those keeping score) to play Shang Tsung.

    Awesome. Now, if Sony could make a habbit of offering gems like this on a more consistent basis (like XBL's weekly releases) then maybe things will start looking up for my $600 investment.

    Now that is really impressive graphic! I am so glad now that I got a PS3, when I can enjoy such mind blowing visuals! Oh wait I did not got a PS3... But who cares... this game is so awesome and looks so good I will buy one, I think maybe.

    Well i got MKU3 xbox 360 online is great,but i hardly play it but good on them mk2 was a awesome game...

    I like the price, but I guess they gotta charge less, since Sony charges more to get the console.

    The reason I think MK3 was better has mostly to do with the combos, which were new to the series. Plus it had way more playable characters than MKII, and the levels were cooler. UMK3 was also great, but I spent my time with the regular 3 on SNES. Although I did have MKII on Game Gear (!) and absolutely loved it.

    oh yea and mk trilogy on ps waas HORRRRIBLE

    i mean the game paused and had to LOAD when u picked shang sung and morphed.. and had to pause and load for another 5 seconds to morph back to shang.. BIG MISTAKE>

    Dude everyone knows mk3 sucked really bad.. So bad they had to make another version UMK3 to please all the fans..

    No sub no scorp worst game ever.. gimmie a break sooo many people complained they had to release it with classic sub, and scorp.. and all sorts of fixes to this very broken fighter... Mk2 is the best cause it was perfectly balanced and i honestly think the game looked WAY better then mk3... another reason they chose mk2 was because mk2 is the real reason people play fighting games today.. well not totallly true i mean street fighter 2 was huge blowup but this game brought CROWDS!!! I bought a ps3 cause its the greatest console known to man but after i heaerd about thisl,, I truely think sony knows EXACTLY what people want.. An online Killer Instinct would mae the cake even sweeter
