Mega Man 9 advances on Wii, PSN, XBL

Publisher's all-new 8-bit adventure for iconic blue war machine lands on Nintendo's and Sony's platforms next week, Microsoft's console October 1.

Capcom has been reveling in its back catalog in recent years, breathing new life into classic franchises by taking the tried-and-true gameplay and polishing the graphics with a fresh, high-definition luster. The publisher is taking the opposite tack with Mega Man 9, however, making an all-new game and giving it the nostalgia-inducing veneer of the 8-bit era.

Today, Capcom gave gamers a date for when they can expect to experience the 8-bit Mega Man revival. Mega Man 9 will lead on Nintendo's WiiWare on September 22, with the PlayStation Network edition following September 25. The game will arrive on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade on October 1. The game will be available for $10 in each platform's respective currency.

As detailed in GameSpot's hands-on with the game from this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, Mega Man 9 promises a fresh bout of the series' signature punishing platforming gameplay. This time out, the titular mechanical hero battles his way through eight stages that are each capped by a unique robot boss.

    Yeah no pc, probably because of the possibility of rom ripping.

    Not if they made it a Gametap exclusive title...
    Gametap games aren't possible to pirate.

    @xkojimax, you do realize MM9 is a new game, inspired by MM2. @goochtoe, MM9 looks exactly like MM2 ...

    I might just get this game, shut the music off and listen to the Minibosses cover of Megaman 2 tracks. Ah... sonic bliss.

    xNinjaKingx > You serious? Legends was pretty sweet, outside of the kiddy story. It was a lot of fun to play, and using the wide variety of side weapons, along with customizing made me play a lot longer.

    kljohns2 > Could have sworn it was 50 back then but...well it has been 20 years and I wasn't exactly apparent to currency at the time...just wanted to play more games.

    Looking forward to this. I kinda hoped for a 16 bit game but 8 bit is just as good, since its an actual sequel to a series that hasn't been dusted in ages.

    Great Capcom dev interview for Megaman 9 in Sept. play magazine. Its biggest inspiration is Megaman 2. That's awesome.

    If they made it like Megaman 8 then I would be happy. If this game isn't as good as Megaman 2 then I'll be disappointed. Megaman 2 was the ****

    LOL @ some people thinking graphics mattered in the NES / SNES days. The graphics back then were sooo basic that no one cared about how a game looked. I'm sorry, but anyone that argues that is probably in their late teens or early 20's and got into gaming with the PS1.

    Graphics didn't matter until the N64 / PS1 era. The saturn gave people a taste of what is possible and the PS1 blew open the doors for it. Mario and Mega Man and Zelda and Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest didn't sell their copies because of graphics. They ALL sold large quantities because of their gameplay and entertainment values.
